  • Universal Dependencies and Author Attribution of Short Texts with Syntax Alone

    Open Access•Robert Gorman, Robert J Gorman•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2022

Improving methods of stylometrics and classification so that they give good results with small texts is the focus of much research in the digital humanities and in the NLP community more generally. Recent work has suggested that an approach using combinations of shallow and deep morpho-syntactic information can be quite successful. But because the data in that study were taken from hand annotated dependency treebanks, the wider applicability of s…

  • Approaching Questions of Text Reuse in Ancient Greek Using Computational Syntactic Stylometry

    Open Access•Vanessa B Gorman, Robert J Gorman•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2016

We are investigating methods by which data from dependency syntax treebanks of ancient Greek can be applied to questions of authorship in ancient Greek historiography. From the Ancient Greek Dependency Treebank were constructed syntax words (sWords) by tracing the shortest path from each leaf node to the root for each sentence tree. This paper presents the results of a preliminary test of the usefulness of the sWord as a stylometric discriminator…

  • Τρυφη and υβρις in the Περι Βιων of Clearchus

    Robert J Gorman, Vanessa B Gorman•ARTICLE•Philologus•2010•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

Current scholarship on Clearchus’ Lives emphasizes a moralizing historiographical schema of pernicious luxury, in which truphē leads to koros , then to hybris , and finally to destruction. Yet all the fragments used to construct this theory are preserved in one late source, the Deipnosophistae of Athenaeus. A study of the diction and immediate context of these so-called fragments demonstrates that the moral themes are presented in language that i…

  • Rural Medical School Applicants

Open Access•Daniel R Longo, Robert J Gorman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2005

CONTEXT AND PURPOSE: Medical schools located in states with sizable rural areas are concerned about preparing physicians for practice in these areas; this is of particular concern for medical schools that are part of a state-owned university with a responsibility to educate physicians for rural areas. Because individuals from rural areas are most likely to return to practice medicine in rural areas at the conclusion of their training, it is impor…
