Beyond the margins
This article examines the paradoxical status of eight Afro-Iberian musicians at the court of Philip IV of Spain. Documented from 1657 onwards, these men occupied a hybrid position: though referred to in archival sources as enslaved, they were afforded the markers of professional artists, including specialized training, royal patronage and financial provision. This chapter examines literary, visual, and historical sources that are testament to black Africans playing music and singing in houses, streets, taverns, and confraternities. It explores three broad categories of spaces—streets, courts, and ships—as sites of cultural negotiation for black musicians and performers. This book recovers a missing chapter in the history of Afro-Iberian diasporas. From the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, black women and men—enslaved, free(d), and half-manumitted—resided in the Iberian peninsula, particularly as a result of the transatlantic slave trade.
