  • Recent research into Minoan extra-urban sanctuaries

    Open Access•Matthew Haysom•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2015

In keeping with the new format of Archaeological Reports , this contribution takes a thematic approach. It seeks to draw wider attention to some of the diverse new primary research that has taken place since 2000 on Minoan (here glossed as Proto- and Neopalatial) extra-urban sanctuaries. For many years, discussion of these sites has largely involved synthesis. No example of a Minoan extra-urban sanctuary has ever progressed all the way from syste…

  • Crete (prehistoric to Hellenistic)

    Open Access•Matthew Haysom•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2014

This has been a relatively quiet year in terms of newly-discovered Cretan material appearing for the first time in print. The main event was the continued publication of the backlog of Archaiologikon Deltion with the appearance of the 2005 volume. This, of course, contained a lot less material than last year's volume, which covered four years, 2001–2004. As a result, the disadvantages of late publication were more apparent, since all the most not…

  • Crete (Iron Age to Hellenistic)

    Open Access•Matthew Haysom•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2013

This year, the newly-published material bookends nearly a decade of archaeological work on the island with ADelt covering work on Crete from 2001 to 2004 and the second volume of Archaiologiko Ergo Kritis showcasing work in the years immediately before 2010. Several of the more impressive discoveries from the beginning of the decade have been known to the wider archaeological community for some time, but their publication in ADelt allows us to di…

  • The Double-Axe

    Open Access•Matthew Haysom•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

The Double-Axe has always been considered as one of the most important religious symbols in Minoan Crete. This paper reassesses the significance of the Double-Axe and puts forward a new interpretation for it. It recognizes the great potential for change in symbolic meanings during the Bronze Age and seeks to understand the Double-Axe in as narrow a period as is realistically possible by filtering out evidence from other periods. Central to the ar…
