  • The Impact of Agribusiness Development Policies on Water Resources

Open Access•Moussa Ait el kadi, Lhoussaine Bouchaou et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environment &…•2026

As the water crisis intensifies around the world, environmental and social shocks such as livelihood loss, conflicts, and tragic depletion of water resources arise. While agribusiness development policies aim at improving the economy, it ignores the governance of limited water resources, vulnerable environment, and rural communities. In this study, we investigate socio-economic and environmental effects of hydro-agricultural policies in the Souss…

  • Urban art in North-eastern Africa

    Open Access•Vı́ctor M Fernández, Carlos Orellana García•ARTICLE•Culture & History Digital Journal•2025•Referências: 10

An introduction is presented to the urban art, mostly of painted advertisements on public buildings, in Western and Northern Ethiopia, with a short reference to the rare cases observed in nearby Sudan. It is also an opportunity to consider some of the folk paintings housed in the Asosa Ethnographic Museum (Benishangul-Gumuz, Western Ethiopia) re-installed by the authors in 2006-2009. Finally, a painter of this type of art, as well as funeral port…

  • Lead isotopic provenance of some coins and other bronze items from an early Swahili site in Ibo Island (northern Mozambique)

    Open Access•I Montero-Ruiz, Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2025•Referências: 44

Northern Mozambique has traditionally been considered marginal within the Swahili trade of the western Indian Ocean due to the absence of outstanding harbour stone-built towns. However, our research on Ibo island (Quirimbas Archipelago) proves the role played by small coastal villages in the early development of the Indian Ocean trade route. In this paper, we discuss the result of a lead isotope analysis performed on samples of two coins and some…

  • Judith and the Dragon

Open Access•Vı́ctor M Fernández, Jorge De Torres Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Aethiopica•2016

In the 2014 excavations at the Jesuit church of Gorgora Iyäsus on the northern shore of Lake Ṭana a remarkable relief in stone was unearthed. The relief was originally part of the church’s façade. It represents the biblical heroine Judith over a dragon and it contains two inscriptions in Gǝʿǝz from the Book of Judith and Genesis. This piece represents one of the few recorded inscriptions on stone from the end of the Aksumite period to the present…

  • Enlivening the dying ruins

    Open Access•Vı́ctor M Fernández•ARTICLE•Culture & History Digital Journal•2013•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

A summary is presented of the recent archaeological research led by the University Complutense of Madrid on the residences and monuments of the Jesuit missions in Ethiopia, most of them built at the end of the Mission period, between 1621 and 1632. The paper examines the known mission sites in turn, concentrating on the most important ones located in the region of Dembya, north of lake Tana. The emphasis has been put on the contrast between the i…

  • The Azazo Project

Jaime Almansa, Gashaw Belay et al.•ARTICLE•Public Archaeology•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 11

In this article we discuss the motivations, aims, and preliminary results of working with a local community in Ethiopia. Trying to escape from the (neo)colonial archaeology that is still practised in Africa, this project aims to achieve a cooperative and participative archaeology. This work with the community has been one of our main priorities in our last seasons, and although we have focused on elementary school and university students, we have…

  • A Late Stone Age sequence from West Ethiopia

    Vı́ctor M Fernández, I De La Torre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2007•Citada por: 14•Referências: 16

In this paper, the results of the test excavations in two rock shelters in the Central Ethiopian escarpment near the Sudanese border are presented. A continuous sequence of quartz lithic industry, from the lowest levels of K’aaba (with an archaic MSA-like industry of side-scrapers, Levallois- discoid cores and unifacial points) to the upper levels of Bel K’urk’umu (with a LSA industry, characterised by elongated flakes and end-scrapers, that stil…

  • The Neolithic site of Haj Yusif (Central Sudan)
