  • Towards an Environmental History of Television. Water Pollution Issues on Finnish Broadcasting Prior to Earth Day 1970

Simo Laakkonen, Otto Tähkäpää•ARTICLE•Environment and History•2019

If we want to understand the historical expansion of environmental awareness among the great public, then we must answer the questions, who communicated what to whom and how? In addition to traditional print media, television also presumably played a significant role in raising environmental issues to public consciousness. And yet, surprisingly enough, unlike with newspapers, empirical data about television is almost completely lacking. We simply…

  • The Cold War and environmental history

Simo Laakkonen, Viktor Pál et al.•ARTICLE•Cold War History•2016•Citada por: 3

The Cold War was not only for the hearts and minds of people, it was also for their mouths and bellies, that is, for food, energy and raw materials. This signified a global power struggle over the control of natural resources. In addition to the increasing consumption of natural resources and resulting pollution, the destructive capacity of the weapons of mass destruction compelled human beings to recognise that their activities could ultimately …

  • Environmental Nostalgia and Discussions of the State of the Finnish Environment in the 1950s

Simo Laakkonen, Timo Vuorisalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2016

This article explores the contemporary environmental debates of the 1950s in the fields of waste management, water and air pollution, and nature conservation, and discusses whether the state of the environment during that decade in fact deserves to be looked upon with nostalgia. The article shows that Finland in the 1950s was no longer an unspoiled Arcadia, and that environmental problems were common in both urban and rural areas. A major pollute…

  • War and Natural Resources in History

    Open Access•Simo Laakkonen, Richard P Tucker•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2012•Citada por: 4

Natural resources are rarely alone a sufficient reason for declaring war. Nevertheless, through human history natural resources have been an important motive, target, and resource for warfare. Until recently armies lived off the land; their logistical support systems were so rudimentary that nothing else was possible. This process provides the key to much of the damage caused by wars, from pre-historic tribal wars onwards. Colonial states initiat…

  • Asphalt kids and the matrix city

    Open Access•Simo Laakkonen•ARTICLE•Urban History•2011•Citada por: 3•Referências: 1

Existing research in urban environmental history is often characterized by a narrow viewpoint or limited material reflecting the rationalist approach typical of white, middle-aged, middle-class and educated men. This orientation risks overlooking the viewpoint of the majority of urban dwellers: ordinary men, women, children, the elderly and different ethnic groups. The article focuses on the urban environmental history of children, because childh…

  • Cold War and the Environment

    Tuomas Räsänen, Simo Laakkonen•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

The Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area signed in 1974 in Helsinki is probably the most important environmental agreement consummated in the Baltic Sea region. This article is the first study that explores the history of this agreement, also known as the Helsinki Convention, by using primary archival sources. The principal sources are the archives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. We examine…

  • Changing Environments or Shifting Paradigms? Strategic Decision Making toward Water Protection in Helsinki, 1850–2000

    Simo Laakkonen, Sari Laurila•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

The study examines the history of strategic decision-making concerning water protection in Helsinki, 1850-2000. We identified five major strategic decisions that occurred during the study period. The results indicate that strategic decision-making evolves in long-term policy cycles that last on average 20-30 years. New policy cycles are caused by paradigm shifts. Paradigms are shared and predominant ways of understanding reality that help when gr…

  • Legal Requirements and Wastewater Discharges to Polish Water Bodies, 1945–2003

    Piotr Kowalik, Simo Laakkonen•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•Referências: 1

The postwar development of water protection legislation and wastewater discharges is poorly known for the Baltic Sea region as a whole. This article presents national efforts to govern wastewater discharges in Poland using legal tools over the twentieth century with an emphasis on the postwar period, 1945-2003. The study also attempts to evaluate how the state authority responded to changing legal demands in terms of urban and industrial wastewat…

  • The History of Eutrophication in the Sea Area of Helsinki in the 20th Century

Terttu Finni, Sari Laurila et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2001•Referências: 4

The aim of this study is to present a historical continuum of nearly 100 years of environmental investigations and changes in trophic levels in the sea area of Helsinki. The survey is based on a re-examination of original planktological and meteorological data; the principle being that eutrophication can be detected in plankton assemblages despite changes in methodology. The bays around Helsinki were found to be moderately eutrophic to hypereutro…
