  • Constraints on the age of the Great Sand Dunes, Colorado, from subsurface stratigraphy and OSL dates

    Open Access•Richard F Madole, Shannon A Mahan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

The age of the Great Sand Dunes has been debated for nearly 150 yr. Seven ages ranging from Miocene to late Holocene have been proposed for them. This paper presents new information–chiefly subsurface stratigraphic data, OSL dates, and geomorphic evidence–that indicates that the Great Sand Dunes began to form in the latter part of the middle Pleistocene. The dunes overlie a thick wedge of piedmont-slope deposits, which in turn overlies sediment o…

  • Holocene alluvial stratigraphy and response to climate change in the Roaring River valley, Front Range, Colorado, USA

    Open Access•Richard F Madole•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Stratigraphic analyses and radiocarbon geochronology of alluvial deposits exposed along the Roaring River, Colorado, lead to three principal conclusions: (1) the opinion that stream channels in the higher parts of the Front Range are relics of the Pleistocene and nonalluvial under the present climate, as argued in a water-rights trial USA v. Colorado, is untenable, (2) beds of clast-supported gravel alternate in vertical succession with beds of f…

  • Pleistocene glaciation in the upper Platte River drainage basin, Colorado

  • Late Holocene Eolian Activity in the Mineralogically Mature Nebraska Sand Hills

    Open Access•Daniel R Muhs, Thomas W Stafford et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

The age of sand dunes in the Nebraska Sand Hills has been controversial, with some investigators suggesting a full-glacial age and others suggesting that they were last active in the late Holocene. New accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon ages of unaltered bison bones and organic-rich sediments suggest that eolian sand deposition occurred at least twice in the past 3000 14 C yr B.P. in three widely separated localities and as many as three t…

  • Lake Devlin and Pinedale Glacial History, front Range, Colorado

    Open Access•Richard F Madole•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

Glacial Lake Devlin was an ice-margin lake that formed during Pinedale time when the North Boulder Creek valley glacier blocked the mouth of a tributary near the downvalley limit of glaciation. The lake was about 2 km long and as much as 60 m deep, and was fed by meltwater from small valley glaciers. It accumulated sediment, apparently without interruption, for about 10,000 yr. The inception of Lake Devlin between 23,500 and 21,000 yr B.P. provid…
