Prehistoric Bird Watching in Southern Iberia? The Rock Art of Tajo de las Figuras Reconsidered
This paper studies the relationship between humans and birds in the recent prehistory of the Southern Iberian Peninsula. With its high number of bird, mammal, and anthropomorphic paintings, a small rock shelter –Tajo de las Figuras– provides an excellent case study to address this topic. En el mbito geogrfico que nos ocupa, entornos de la Laguna de la Janda y Campo de Gibraltar, existen unos trescientos abrigos con arte rupestre escasamente estudiados. En veintids de ellos est representada la figura soliforme en sus paredes rocosas. La denominada Cueva del Sol es uno de los abrigos que forman parte de este conjunto. This paper explores the potential of acoustics to interpret the prehistoric rock art of southern A ndalusia ( S pain). Tests undertaken in two areas, north of the C elemín river and the B acinete area, will form the basis of our discussion.
