Ceramic resource landscapes of ancient Pergamon
The selection of mineral raw materials in (pre-industrial) ceramic production depends on their geogenic availability, accessibility, technological properties, and the framing socio-ecological conditions for resource exploitation. The connection of these factors is explored in the current study by taking the Pergamon Micro-region in western Anatolia as an example; here, potters worked within a geologically diverse landscape that offered both alluv…
Understanding geomorphodynamics in the Pergamon micro-region from a socio-ecological perspective
A systematic interdisciplinary approach based on the socio-ecological model of the Vienna school has been adopted to achieve a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of the ancient metropolis of Pergamon (western Anatolia) and its micro-region. The city of Pergamon ranks among the ‘guiding fossils’ of urban culture in antiquity. We describe how the socio-ecological model is subject to adaptation and discussion to fit the needs and circumstan…
The Yığma Tepe of Pergamon
The Yığma Tepe of Pergamon is one of the largest known burial mounds in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its internal structure, especially the existence and location of burials, remains unknown so far because its height of 32 m and the diameter of 158 m have restricted extensive excavations. To explore the interior of the Yığma Tepe, we applied shear wave reflection profiling and traveltime tomography, locally complemented by electrical resistivity to…
The Yığma Tepe of Pergamon
The monumental tumulus Yığma Tepe is an important part of the cityscape of the ancient city of Pergamon. The tumulus construction is estimated in the Hellenistic period, the internal structure and exact purpose have been unknown so far. Its height of 32 m and diameter of 158 m make the deep interior of the tumulus practically inaccessible for excavations. Therefore, we applied a combination of geophysical measurements and archaeological sondages …
Marine seismic investigation of the ancient Kane harbour bay, Turkey
The Purpose and Age of Underwater Walls in the Bay of Elaia of Western Turkey
Pergamum (modern: Bergama) was operating an important harbour used by military forces and merchants at the city of Elaia during Hellenistic and Roman Imperial times. Harbour‐related facilities such as warehouses, breakwaters and wharfs document the importance of this harbour site not only for the Pergamenians. This paper focuses on the purpose and age of six submerged wall structures situated approximately 1 km south of the ancient closed harbour…
The environs of Elaia's ancient open harbour – a reconstruction based on microfaunal evidence
Taken from the sea, reclaimed by the sea
Shops and Industries
As first-time visitors walk through the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, theyare struck by the large number of shops, workshops and taverns, distinguished from the entrances of dwellings by their wide store fronts (Figure 29.1). Particularly on the busy main roads, it is easy to get the impression that the street fronts of the buildings consist almost entirely of small business establishments, which I will designate by the Latin term tabernae. I…

Style and message on the Column Of Marcus Aurelius
