    Open Access•Bente de Leede, Nadeera Rupesinghe•ARTICLE•Law and History Review•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 3

In eighteenth-century, colonial Sri Lanka, the Dutch church kept extensive registers of the local population. These “school thombos” contain individual registration of baptism, marriage, school attendance and death. This article argues that the school thombos reveal moral control over family life by the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch Reformed Church, while offering locals a legal and religious identity to employ in negotiating the Dutch c…

  • Do you know the ninth commandment? Tensions of the oath in Dutch colonial Sri Lanka

    Nadeera Rupesinghe•ARTICLE•Comparative Legal History•2019•Citada por: 4

This article examines diverse practices in the establishment of marriage partnerships in eighteenth-century Sri Lanka, 1 parts of which were controlled by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Family law was an area in which the attempt to transform local practices was conspicuously present, but not fully achieved. Lawful marriage was linked to conversion to Dutch Protestantism and to inheritance of property. In the authoritative space of the provi…

    Nadeera Rupesinghe•ARTICLE•Portugese Journal of Social…•2017•Citada por: 1

The Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie [VOC]) set up a judicial forum of European and native officials called the Landraad in parts of early modern Sri Lanka. Its primary tasks were to hear certain civil cases and maintain the thombo (land register). The VOC wished to define who could do what in which piece of land and what it could extract in return. This article is a study of land rights in southern Sri Lanka, providing …
