Co‐Production With Mental Health Family Carers
INTRODUCTION: Family engagement in mental health service reform, design, treatment, and research is highlighted as important within government and governance guidelines; however, inconsistencies of inclusion continue to be experienced and reported. Within mental health and community research there are calls for the adoption of participatory and co-production methodologies. OBJECTIVE: To add to the informed debate about patient and public involvem…
Mental Health Family Carer Coresearchers
Purpose: Few studies demonstrate approaches to working with mental health family carers in research, service change or system reform. This article formulates participatory principles for co-research with mental health family carers. Method: Twenty-three members of a Project Steering Group, with different levels of experience in research and advocacy, were invited to participate in one of two focused-conversations, to reflect upon a 9-month nation…
Knowledge Families Hold
BACKGROUND: Through an in-depth exploration of mental health family carers' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, this co-produced study identified recommendations for advocacy, practice and policy implications to uphold family carer wellbeing. Government-enforced restrictions, changed service availability and difficulties accessing hospitals, led to additional anxiety, depression and elevated distress, especially for people expe…

The utility of livestock dung for reconstructing recent ethnological and environmental histories
Animal dung is evaluated here as a tool to reconstruct recent societal and environmental changes. Studies completed on the macro- and micro-contents from dung deposited in a mountain cave in Catalonia during the 1970–1980s, preceding the socio-economic changes in the area, was supplemented by the testimony of the last shepherd alive in the area. This information was also compared with evidence from aerial photographs of the area surrounding the c…

Holocene coastal change and geoarchaeology at Howick, Northumberland, UK
The recent discovery of one of the earliest Mesolithic occupation sites in northern Britain, at Howick on the Northumberland coast, in association with multiperiod archaeological evidence nearby, highlights the importance of UK coastal settings as focii of human occupation through the Holocene. Environmental evidence from a nearby river valley (8.15 m of sediment ranging in age from about 12 000 cal. BP to the present) records local and regional …

The palaeogeography of Mesolithic settlement-subsistence and shell midden formation in the Muge valley, Lower Tagus Basin, Portugal
This paper reports the first detailed palaeogeographical analysis of the environmental context of late Mesolithic shell midden sites in the lower Tagus area and focuses on the lower Muge valley, which contains an internationally significant Mesolithic record. The lower Muge valley fill comprises buried estuarine and fluvial environments contemporary with Mesolithic settlement. Holocene environmental and palaeogeographic changes influenced Mesolit…

Effects of burning and grazing on carbon sequestration in a Pennine blanket bog, UK
Terrestrial ecosystems contain large amounts of carbon (C) and have the potential to significantly increase atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentrations. Peatlands are particularly important for C storage, although little is known about the effects of anthropogenic activities on C balance in these ecosystems. Sheep-grazing and rotational burning are widely practised on blanket peat moorlands in the United Kingdom. The effects of these activi…
Ancient Forests in Spain
Five pollen diagrams from two mires in the province of Huelva in south-west Spain are re-evaluated in the light of 15 radiocarbon dates, and multivariate numerical analyses of modern and fossil pollen samples in the region. The results of these analyses suggest that managed woodland of dehesa type can be detected in pollen diagrams, and can be interpreted within the archaeological sequence known from the area

A multi-proxy record of Holocene climatic change in southwestern Spain
Palaeolimnological data (diatoms, ostracods, foraminifera, molluscs, aquatic pollen and lithology) from a radiocarbon dated sediment core from a saline lake, the Laguna de Medina, provide the first complete record of Holocene lake-level change for southwest Spain for the last c. 9000 cal. years. The lake has always been relatively shallow but has exhibited marked fluctuations in salinity and water depth, especially in the earlier record when osci…

The Holocene forest history of the Montes Universales, Teruel, Spain
A radiocarbon-dated peat core from Ojos del Tremedal, Montes Universales, Spain, provides insights into the dynamics of high montane forest communities in Central Iberia from the Lateglacial to the late Holo cene. The Lateglacial landscape was characterized by grassland dominated by Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Artemisia, together with Juniperus, which was invaded from c. 9600 cal. BP by Betula and Pinus as climate conditions improved. Given the red…

Diatoms and pH reconstruction
Palaeolimnological diatom data comprise counts of many species expressed as percentages for each sample. Reconstruction of past lake-water pH from such data involves two steps; (i) regression, where responses of modern diatom abundances to pH are modelled and (ii) calibration where the modelled responses are used to infer pH from diatom assemblages preserved in lake sediments. In view of the highly multivariate nature of diatom data, the strongly…
A Holocene Alluvial Sequence in the lower Tyne Valley, Northern Britain
Palaeoenvironmental investigations have been made of late Quaternary sediments infilling the lower Tyne valley at Scotswood, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 18 km upstream from the mouth of the river. Attention has focused on the Holocene alluvial sedimentary sequence using sedimentological, geochemical and palynological analyses. Holocene valley floor development from c. 7500 BP has been largely dominated by a tendency towards river aggradation with some l…

The palaeosalinity and vegetational history of Garaet el Ichkeul, northwest Tunisia
Palaeoecological studies of a 14 C-dated, 6 m Livingstone core collected from Lac Ichkeul, N. Tunisia have allowed a palaeosalinity and vegetational history record for the last 3000 years to be derived from pollen, chemical and faunal evidence. The lake has been the subject of at least three different salinity regimes; saline (c. 3000 BP-c. 2000 BP), then brackish - fresh (c. 2000 BP-c. 1500 BP), and finally saline (c. 1500 BP-present). These cha…
Long-term changes in the extent of heather moorland in upland Britain and Ireland
On the basis of pollen analysis of 210 Pb-dated lake and loch sediment cores from across upland Britain and Ireland we show that heather cover has declined in c. 90% of sites over the last 200 years. Our analysis covers the time from AD 1400 to the present with a resolution of decades. Major losses commenced during the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, and were greatest in regions with high grazing pressures from sheep. Subsequently, extensive…

Sedimentary records of the extent and impact of atmospheric contamination from a remote Siberian highland lake
The Central Asian Khamar Daban Mountain Range (SE Siberia) is a remote region with softwater lakes that probably receive atmospheric pollution from local industry as well as via long-distance transport. Palaeolimnological evidence of the impact of atmospheric pollution at one isolated and otherwise undisturbed highland site in the Khamar Daban, Lake Kholodnoye, was obtained. Short sediment cores were analysed for radio-isotopes, to establish a se…

Responses of a Saline Lake Ecosystem in a Semiarid Region to Irrigation and Climate Variability
To adequately manage the fragile and changing environments of semiarid regions it is essential to disentangle human from climate or other environmental impacts over longer timescales than human memory. We investigated sediment cores from Salada Chiprana, a saline lake in the central Ebro basin in Spain, using pollen, charcoal, sedimentological, geochemical and radiometric dating techniques. The sequence indicates a rapid evolution from an ephemer…
