On Whose Shoulders
The title of this piece refers to Newton’s only known modest remark: “If I have seen farther than other men, it was because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.” Since he himself was so much greater than his predecessors, he was in fact standing on the shoulders of dwarfs, a much less attractive metaphor. I intend no comparisons with Newton inwhat follows: NLP/CL has noNewtons and noNobel Prizes so far, and quite rightly. I intend only to d…
Language, Cohesion and Form
Margaret Masterman was a pioneer in the field of computational linguistics. Working in the earliest days of language processing by computer, she believed that meaning, not grammar, was the key to understanding languages, and that machines could determine the meaning of sentences. She was able, even on simple machines, to undertake sophisticated experiments in machine translation, and carried out important work on the use of semantic codings and t…
Artificial companions
The paper concerns the closely related topics of the possibility of machines having identifiable personalities, and the possible future legal responsibilities of machines. As will become clear, I wish to explore these topics in terms which are basically those of computational linguistics; and by 'machines' here, I intend software entities, rather than robots, and in particular the sort of software agents now being encountered on the web, ranging …
Data-Driven Detection of Figurative Language Use in Electronic Language Resources
Examples of figurative language use have until now been the product of linguistic introspection and manual lookup in dictionaries and texts. The availability of electronic semantic resources makes it possible to investigate the nature of regularities between sense distinctions in a data-driven way. This article describes a semiautomatic approach to select instances of metonymy and metaphor from a large electronic thesaurus
What is Lexical Tuning?
The paper contrasts three approaches to the extension of lexical sense: what we shall call, respectively, lexical tuning; a second based on lexical closeness and relaxation; and a third known as underspecification, or the use of lexical rules. These approaches have quite different origins in artificial intelligence (AI) and linguistics, and involve corpus input, lexicons and knowledge bases in quite different ways. Moreover, the types of sense ex…
The Interaction of Knowledge Sources in Word Sense Disambiguation
Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is a computational linguistics task likely to benefit from the tradition of combining different knowledge sources in articial intelligence research. An important step in the exploration of this hypothesis is to determine which linguistic knowledge sources are most useful and whether their combination leads to improved results. We present a sense tagger which uses several knowledge sources. Tested accuracy exceeds 9…

Automatic Natural Language Parsing
This collection of papers on automatic natural language parsing examines research and development in language processing over the past decade. It focuses on current trends toward a phrase structure grammar and deterministic parsing
