Eliminate the sources of harm”
As cities respond to climate change, what adaptive measures do residents of rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods prioritize, and why? As part of a Participatory Action Research study in metropolitan Boston, we conducted semi-structured interviews with residents of nine rapidly developing neighborhoods to explore their conceptualizations of resilience to climate change and their desires for climate adaptation. We found that residents in these communi…
‘Together We Know a Lot’
This paper examines the social learning process among a group of community resident and academic researchers working together on a Participatory Action Research study exploring the relationship between urban development and community health. Through a reflective case study of our collaborative data analysis team’s work, we highlight key social learning dynamics on our team, as well as key enabling conditions that fostered social learning. We offe…
Exploring ownership of change and health equity implications in neighborhood change processes
Traditional planning processes have perpetuated the exclusion of historically marginalized communities, imposing vulnerability to climate (health) crises. We investigate how ownership of change fosters equitable climate resilience and community well-being through participatory action research. Our study highlights the detrimental effects of climate gentrification on community advocacy for climate security and health, negatively impacting well-bei…
The Urban Infrastructure of Care
Problem, research strategy and findings Around the world, people’s life-sustaining capacities for caring for one another are overextended in unequal and unsustainable ways, with major implications for gender, racial, and health equity in cities. Here we explore how care work depends on the urban environment and how planning can enhance the social and material conditions for caregiving in cities. We analyzed semistructured interviews with family c…
Urban Planning for Health Equity Must Employ an Intersectionality Framework
Urban planning for health equity should be guided by an intersectional approach. Intersectionality is an essential framework for understanding the multiple overlapping factors, such as social and economic inequalities, that produce health disparities. We offer four strategies that planning researchers and practitioners can use to develop and integrate an intersectional approach into planning for health equity: challenging implicit and explicit as…
Operationalizing the Capabilities Approach to Understand Neighborhood Well-Being in a Participatory Action Research Study
The capabilities approach is useful for evaluating progress toward the just city. We report how a Participatory Action Research consortium studying neighborhood change and well-being designed a survey instrument measuring respondents’ ability to fulfill a set of common life priorities. We present data on priority endorsement and fulfillment, and conduct a factor analysis to explore the underlying structure of the instrument. We argue that the ins…
The Moving Mapper
Problem, research strategy, and findings Big data promises new insights for planning but threatens to exclude community expertise from knowledge creation and decision-making processes. Participatory methods are needed to ensure that big data is marshaled to address problems of importance to communities, that hypotheses and interpretations are shaped by evidence from lived experience, and that results are ultimately useful to residents. In this st…
Ownership of change
Processes of neighborhood change are important determinants of health. One salient dimension of the experience of neighborhood changes is a person's evolving sense of empowerment over the changes around them, such as development of new housing or shifts in economic opportunity. Community residents collaborating on a Participatory Action Research study developed the novel construct "ownership of change" to capture this psychosocial process, and hy…

Rising home values and Covid-19 case rates in Massachusetts
We explore whether housing displacement pressure could help explain place-based disparities in Massachusetts COVID-19 prevalence. We use qualitative data from the Healthy Neighborhoods Study to illustrate how rising and unaffordable housing costs are experienced by residents in municipalities disproportionately affected by COVID-19. We then predict municipal-level COVID-19 case rates as a function of home value increases and housing cost burden p…
Designing and Facilitating Collaborative Research Design and Data Analysis Workshops
One impediment to expanding the prevalence and quality of community-engaged research is a shortage of instructive resources for collaboratively designing research instruments and analyzing data with community members. This article describes how a consortium of community residents, grassroots community organizations, and academic and public institutions implemented collaborative research design and data analysis processes as part of a participator…
Community change and resident needs
The health implications of urban development, particularly in rapidly changing, low-income urban neighborhoods, are poorly understood. We describe the Healthy Neighborhoods Study (HNS), a Participatory Action Research study examining the relationship between neighborhood change and population health in nine Massachusetts neighborhoods. Baseline data from the HNS survey show that social factors, specifically income insecurity, food insecurity, soc…

VII casing the mother. These fragments of glass, loosely interjoined at first, were now cemented together by a substance secreted by the body of the animal. Two facts are to be remarked in this observation: first, the act whereby the Difugia collects the materials for providing the young individual with acase, is an act of preadaptation to an end not present, but remote; this act, therefore, has all the marks of an instinct.Further, the instinct of…
