Factors Affecting Food-Related Activity Performance in Low-Income Older Adults
In an effort to reduce food access issues for older adults, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides monthly food assistance specifically for low-income older adults through local food banks. The purpose of this study was to explore factors that influence an older adult’s performance in food-related activities. Older adults eligible to receive a monthly senior food box from community…

Critical Social Justice Inquiry Circles
This article presents a qualitative dialogic poetic response in the form of a critical social justice inquiry circle and a critical reading of Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds as poetry and as an intentional gesture of listening as activism. This discourse is one of resistance to the acritical/apolitical nature of schooling and to prepare hegemonic/White educators to become culturally responsive (ala Milner) and to devise a new critical methodolog…
Hypnotic Discontinuation Using a Blinded (Masked) Tapering Approach
Chronic use of hypnotic medications such as benzodiazepines is associated with adverse consequences including increased risk of falls. Efforts to help patients discontinue these medications have had varying levels of success. We developed a blinded (masked) tapering protocol to help patients taper off hypnotics. In this blinded protocol, patients consented to a drug taper but agreed to forego knowledge about the specific tapering schedule or the …
Annual Research Review
BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs), including computer-assisted therapy, smartphone apps and wearable technologies, are heralded as having enormous potential to improve uptake and accessibility, efficiency, clinical effectiveness and personalisation of mental health interventions. It is generally assumed that DHIs will be preferred by children and young people (CYP) given their ubiquitous digital activity. However, it remains uncerta…

The experience of couples being given an oxygen concentrator to use at home
This longitudinal study explores the lived experience of four couples where one person from each couple is prescribed an oxygen concentrator to use at home. Transcripts were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The findings reported here focus on two super-ordinate themes: 'the journey of acceptance' and 'negotiating changing relationships'. Participants described a gradual process of accepting the device into their lives, the…
Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Older Adults With Occult Sleep-Disordered Breathing
OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to determine whether mild, occult sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) moderates the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) in older adults and to explore whether CBTI reduces the number of patients eligible for positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. METHODS: Data were analyzed for 134 adults 60 years or older with insomnia and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of less than 15 who were randomized…
Broken Windows, Broken Promises
We present our narrative as an exercise in Critical Performance Pedagogy: Culture Jamming. It is our contribution to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Our collective voice, which is framed as a reflexive layered narrative, is offered to both incite introspection and provide a glimpse into the lived understanding of the "Other[ed]." The call and response-inspired exchange represents indigenous method, and is a challenge to the hegemony regarding the…
Recommended Amount of Sleep for a Healthy Adult
Racial Battle Fatigue
Covering equity issues of sex, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability, this work presents creative, nontraditional narratives about performing social justice work, acknowledging the contributions of previous generations, describing current challenges, and appealing to readers to join the struggle toward a better world. Many would like to believe we are living as "post-racial" America, long past the days of discrimination and margina…

Peer Sexual Harassment
This exploratory intervention study examines the effectiveness of a single-sex women's studies course in reducing sexual harassment in an at-risk high school. It was hypothesized that the young women's loci of control would become more internal as a result of the course and participants would feel they had more control over their lives. Findings indicate that participants' knowledge of sexual harassment gained from the intervention had been retai…
Evidence for the Validity of a Sleep Habits Survey for Adolescents
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the validity of self-reported survey estimates of sleep patterns in adolescents through a comparison of retrospective survey descriptions of usual school- and weekend-night sleep habits with diary-reported sleep patterns and actigraphically estimated sleep behaviors over a subsequent week. DESIGN AND SETTING: High school students completed a Sleep Habits Survey about the previous 2 weeks and then wore an actigraph (AM…
