Older people in custody in a forensic psychiatric facility, prevalence of dementia, and community reintegration needs
The Application of Machine Learning to a General Risk–Need Assessment Instrument in the Prediction of Criminal Recidivism
The Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (LS/CMI) is one of the most frequently used tools to assess criminogenic risk–need in justice-involved individuals. Meta-analytic research demonstrates strong predictive accuracy for various recidivism outcomes. In this exploratory study, we applied machine learning (ML) algorithms (decision trees, random forests, and support vector machines) to a data set with nearly 100,000 LS/CMI administrations t…
Dynamic Appraisal of Intimate Partner Violence Risk and Need
This study examined the psychometric, predictive, and dynamic properties of intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. The sample consisted of 88 men attending an outpatient IPV correctional program. The Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA) was rated at pretreatment using participant files. The Spousal Assault Risk Assessment–Version 3 (SARA-V3) was rated at pre- and posttreatment using collateral information (e.g., facilitator ratings, fi…
An Examination of the Professional Override of the Level of Service Inventory–Ontario Revision
This study examined the nature and impacts of the professional override on the Level of Service Inventory–Ontario Revision (LSI-OR), using a large archival database of 40,539 individuals’ information. Research questions focused on the predictive validity of various LSI-OR risk metrics, including total risk/need scores, initial risk categories, and adjusted risk categories, for various types of recidivism; how professional overrides were used; whe…
Automated Offender Risk Assessment
Adult Offender Assessment and Classification in Custodial Settings
This chapter describes the developments that have occurred over the past three decades in the area of offender assessment and classification, including discussion of why offender classification is so vital to correctional agencies. The importance of using actuarial approaches to predicting the risk of reoffending and danger to others is discussed, as well as the inclusion of static and dynamic factors on composite measures of offender risk and ne…
Thirty years of research on the Level of Service Scales
We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of the Level of Service (LS) scales, their predictive accuracy and group-based differences in risk/need, across 128 studies comprising 151 independent samples and a total of 137,931 offenders. Important potential moderators were examined including ethnicity, gender, LS scale variant, geographic region, and type of recidivism used to measure outcome. Results supported the predictive accuracy of the LS sca…
The Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) Model
The risk-need-responsivity (RNR) model has been widely regarded as the premier model for guiding offender assessment and treatment. The RNR model underlies some of the most widely used risk-needs offender assessment instruments, and it is the only theoretical model that has been used to interpret the offender treatment literature. Recently, the good lives model (GLM) has been promoted as an alternative and enhancement to RNR. GLM sets itself apar…
A meta-analysis of predictors of offender treatment attrition and its relationship to recidivism.
Risk Assessment With Young Offenders
The current investigation is a meta-analysis of the predictive accuracy of three well-known forensic instruments used to appraise risk with young offenders: youth adaptations of the Level of Service Inventory and Psychopathy Checklist and the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk for Youth. Through several avenues, 49 potentially suitable published and unpublished studies (across 44 samples representing 8,746 youth) were identified and evaluated…
The Recent Past and Near Future of Risk and/or Need Assessment
Attitude and Behavior Change of Correctional Clientele
Fifty offenders incarcerated in a minimum security provincial institution participated in a variety of group programs with community volunteers. Inmates were randomly assigned to one of four treatment regimes or to a control group condition. The experiment subjects participated in community group discussions with either trained or untrained volunteers, and a concurrent activity, either a self‐control program or a recreational group. A test batter…
The attitudinal effects of structured discussions and recreational association between young criminal offenders and undergraduate volunteers
The conditions under which association with citizen volunteers will influence the attitudes of prison residents is a question of some general and applied interest. In this study, positive effects on offender attitudes were evident following association within a focused group discussion condition but not following group recreational association. Changes following recreational association were no different from those evident within a routine incarc…
Some Norms and Validities of the Quick Test for Delinquent Samples
Forms 1, 2, and 3 of Ammons and Ammons Quick Test (QT) were given to three delinquent samples ( ns = 43, 65, 49). The Quick Test was correlated with the WAIS, Differential Aptitude Test, Revised Beta and Otis Em. The role of the QT in correctional diagnostics was discussed
