Behavioural Aspects of Cigarette Smoking in Relation to Arousal Level
To test the hypothesis that cigarette smokers use smoking to control arousal level 160 habitual light and heavy cigarette smokers of both sexes smoked a standard cigarette and simulated smoking under conditions eliciting either low or high arousal. Under high arousal heavy smokers exhibited a significant reduction in rate of smoking but not in simulating smoking. Association Between Galvanic Skin Response and Rorschach Performance
GSR was monitored during Rorschach testing. High GSR's were associated with (1) short reaction times, (2) initial responses to Cards II and VII, and (3) the following categories of initial response: S, m, FK, cF, H, (H), and (A). GSR may be considered an index of the subject's anxiety level; the findings are explained in these terms
Relationship between Sharpening and Extraversion
During the course of a recent investigation (2) Ss were asked to recall a series of 10 drawings depicting stick engaged in various activities representative of certain of the needs in Murray's system. It was noticed, en passant, that the ways in which Ss described these drawings in their efforts at recall seemed to be related to a personality characteristic which might be termed social extraversion. Association Between Muscular Tension and Work Output
E.M.G. electrodes were placed on the right forearm and chin of ten subjects while they performed simple addition. It was possible to record from one pair of electrodes the amount of muscular activity in the right forearm while the other pair indicated the moment of speaking and thus the speed of work.
