Terence. Eunuchus
Terence
Terence's Eunuchus (The Eunuch) was his most successful play in his lifetime but has been surprisingly neglected by modern commentators. In this first ever full-scale commentary in English, Professor Barsby provides a thorough examination of the play in terms of its literary and dramatic qualities, its staging, and its relationship to the two plays of Menander's on which it is based. The commentary includes scene-by-scene discussions which bring …
Problems of Adaptation in the Eunuchus of Terence
The relationship of Terence’s Eunuchus to its Greek originals has been much discussed. The play was subjected to detailed analysis by a succession of German scholars in the earlier part of this century; these analyses disagreed in detail but they all envisaged considerable modification by Terence of the Eunouchos of Menander which was his main model. In 1959 Walther Ludwig published a major article which patiently demolished these earlier analyse…
The Stage Action of Terence, Phormio 979–989
Scene V.viii of Terence's Phormio (894–989) brings to a climax the confrontation between the trickster Phormio and the two old men Demipho and Chremes. Demipho urges resistance to this blackmail, suggesting th…

Rhythmical Factors in Catullus 72, 75, and 85
CATULLUS' ELEGIAC VERSE is predominantly spondaic. He has dactyls in only 37 per cent of the variable feet (that is, in the first four feet of the hexameter and the first two of the pentameter), as against 44 per cent in Propertius, 48 per cent in Tibullus, and 57 per cent in Ovid.1 This being so, predominantly dactylic passages or couplets stand out, and invite the assumption that some special effect is intended. It is the purpose of this articl…
