The Work of Craterus and the Documents in the Attic Orators and in the “Lives of the Ten Orators”
This essay is divided into three parts. The first examines the documents about Antiphon in the “Lives of the Ten Orators” (Plut. X orat. 833d–834b), which have been attributed to the collection of Craterus, and shows that they must be forgeries because the information contained in them is inconsistent with reliable sources about Athenian laws and legal procedure and with the language and formulas of the preserved decrees of the fifth century and …
Major Events in the Recent Past in Assembly Speeches and the Authenticity of [Andocides] On the Peace
This paper begins by demonstrating that speakers in the Assembly did not misrepresent major events in recent history. An examination of Demosthenes’ speeches to the Assembly shows that his statements about recent events are accurate but are usually brief. This is true for speeches to the Assembly found in Thucydides and Xennophon. The main part of the essay shows that the speech On the Peace attributed to Andocides makes major mistakes about rece…

How Strictly Did the Athenian Courts Apply the Law? The Role of Epieikeia
H. Meyer‐Laurin has claimed that the Athenian courts took a stricti iuris approach to the law and did not take extenuating circumstances into account. Established in 1809, the Bermuda dockyard was of great importance to the Royal Navy throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as its foremost naval station in the Western North Atlantic. The local defences of the Bermuda dockyard were started in earnest around 1820. This paper explains the evolution of these defences over the ensuing century, and gives some indication of the future of these historic works
American spies at Bermuda’s forts, 1842–52
In 1809, a dockyard was established by the Royal Navy at Bermuda. Over the next decades, Bermuda was refortified by the Royal Engineers. This paper describes the visits of two American officers to Bermuda for the purpose of spying on the new fortifications. Further material on the forts at Bermuda is also presented as the preliminary results of a survey of Bermuda’s forts being undertaken by the author under the auspices of the Bermuda Maritime M…

This paper records the excavation of two moats of the defences of H.M. Dockyard, Bermuda, in 1981. The excavations are part of a programme of work undertaken by the Bermuda Maritime Museum which is now housed in the Keep at the northern end of the Dockyard. The moats are located at the main gate of the Keep and at the Caponier at the S.E. corner of the same fort. At both locations, structural remains of the moats were found, dating from the estab…
