Ecological momentary assessment in internet gaming disorder – Interactions between stress, negative emotions, craving and gaming behavior
Validation and Psychometric Properties of the German Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue) for Preschool Children
Research Findings: The Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue) is a parent-report questionnaire developed in the Netherlands to assess the first three components of children’s empathy, that is, emotion contagion (EC), attention to others’ feelings (AOF), and prosocial actions (PA). We examined the validity of the German version of EmQue for children aged 3–6 (N = 114). Using confirmatory factor analysis, we approved the three-factor structure found in prev…
Annual Research Review
Self‐harm is defined as self‐injury or self‐poisoning, irrespective of the presence of suicidal intent. It includes both non‐suicidal self‐injury and attempted suicide. The lifetime prevalence of self‐harm is approximately 20% in young people. The initial assessment for self‐harm should contain an evaluation of risk, a safety plan and a therapeutic element, which should be focused on understanding the nature of self‐harm, instilling hope and link…
Effectiveness of the school‐based internet intervention StresSOS for the prevention of mental health problems in young people
BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of mental illnesses in adolescents, there is an urgent need for effective prevention strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the school-based internet intervention StresSOS for the universal prevention of mental illnesses in youth. METHODS: A two-arm, randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants were recruited from schools across five regions of Germany. Young people between the ages of 1…
The role of parenting in mitigating the impact of adverse childhood experiences on mental health
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established predictors of poor mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Maternal and paternal parenting behaviors, particularly parental warmth, rejection, and control may influence the psychological trajectories of individuals exposed to ACEs. However, the differential roles of maternal and paternal parenting behaviors remain underexplored. This study invest…
The Cardiac Orthostatic Stress Response as a Function of Internalizing Psychopathology and Sex in Typically Developing Youth—An Observational Study
Stress‐induced physiological changes offer insights into autonomic nervous system (ANS) function beyond resting cardiac activity, relevant to both physical and mental illnesses. Limited research exists on heart rate (HR) reactivity in children and adolescents, particularly in the context of internalizing psychopathology. In a study of n = 48 typically developing adolescents (mean age 16.31 years, SD = 0.51), HR and vagal‐mediated heart rate varia…
Temperament, brain structure and problematic video gaming in adolescence – A six-year longitudinal study
Research Review
BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) typically emerges during adolescence and early adulthood and has severe personal, social and economic consequences. Despite significant research efforts on early intervention over the past two decades, delays in diagnosis and treatment are still common, and exclusion of individuals with BPD from mental health services is prevalent. METHODS: In order to bridge the gap between research and clinical …
Early Struggles—The Relationship of Psychopathology and Development in Early Childhood
These findings highlight the need to identify psychopathology and associated developmental deficits early in childhood which might allow more targeted treatments, enhancing developmental opportunities for affected children
Reasons for non-participation of children and adolescents in a large-scale school-based mental health project
Background Non-participation in mental health studies is an under-explored but very important topic. Investigating reasons for non-participation holds promise for the planning of future study designs and recruitment strategies. This study aimed at investigating reasons for children and adolescents (C&A) not participating in a school-based mental health research project. Methods Data collection took place within the school-based recruitment of a l…
Case report
This is the first description of a patient in which adipsic hypernatremia, a rare autoimmune encephalitis, presented in combination with complex psychiatric symptomatology, including psychosis and catatonia. Adipsic hypernatremia is characterized by autoantibodies against the thirst center of the brain. These autoantibodies cause inflammation and apoptosis in key regions of water homeostasis, leading to lack of thirst and highly increased serum s…
The mediating role of attachment and anger
Attachment insecurity and anger suppression may serve as pathways linking the maternal history of ELM to the risk of child abuse, even when considering maternal psychopathology. Overall, our findings indicate that interventions aimed at strengthening attachment and improving anger suppression may be beneficial for all mothers with ELM history and high child abuse potential, not just those who suffer from mental illness
Investigating the effectiveness of three school based interventions for preventing psychotic experiences over a year period – a secondary data analysis study of a randomized control trial
This study provides the first evidence for a school based intervention that reduce & prevent PEs in adolescence. This intervention is a combination of a school-based screening for psychopathology and subsequent referral intervention significantly reduced PEs in adolescents. Although further research is needed, our findings point to the effectiveness of school-based programmes for prevention of future mental health problems
Under the skin
BACKGROUND: Research has shown a direct path between peer victimization and poor mental health outcomes. However, the impact of bullying prevention on mental health is a largely unexplored field. Therefore, our study examined the longitudinal association between bullying development and trajectories of psychiatric symptoms (emotional problems, total difficulties, nonsuicidal self-injury, and suicidality) and health-related quality of life (HRQL) …
Moderators of pre-post changes in school-based mental health promotion
Psychological stress symptoms decreased among adolescents with mental health problems and not among adolescents at risk for or without mental health problems. Mental health-related knowledge increased for all adolescents. The results add to knowledge on school-based mental health intervention research and practice. Its implications for different prevention strategies (universal, selective or a combination of both) are discussed
Sleep and physical activity
Our results obtained through objective and long-term measurement of both sleep and number of steps suggest weak or non-significant associations between these measures for most sleep variables. We emphasize the importance of the methodology and the separation of within subject from between subject features when examining the relationship between physical activity and sleep
Trapped in a Glass Bell Jar
This study shows that DP/DR symptoms are frequently found in CHR subjects. Investigating two separate DP/DR populations with an identical neuroimaging technique, our study also indicates that there may be divergent pathophysiological mechanisms-decreased neuronal activity in the orbitofrontal cortex, but increased activity within the caudate nucleus-leading to a final common pathway with similar psychopathological symptoms. This suggests that bot…
The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Therapy Outcome in Adolescents Engaging in Nonsuicidal Self-Injury
Objective: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent and clinically significant behavior. There is a substantial association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and NSSI. However, there are no studies investigating the impact of ACEs on NSSI treatment (psychotherapy) outcome. The aim of this secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) on psychotherapy of NSSI was to investigate the relationship between ACEs and treatmen…
Comorbidity of Physical and Anxiety Symptoms in Adolescent

Explaining gender differences in non-fatal suicidal behaviour among adolescents
The findings suggest that gender differences in non-fatal suicidal behaviour among adolescents can to a large extent be explained by the gender differences in emotional and behavioural problems during this age
Prevalence of pathological internet use among adolescents in E urope
AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of pathological internet use (PIU) and maladaptive internet use (MIU) among adolescents in 11 European countries in relation to demographic, social factors and internet accessibility. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: The 7th Framework European Union (EU) funded project, Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE), is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating interventions for risk behaviour…

Reading Books and Watching Films as a Protective Factor against Suicidal Ideation
Reading books and watching films were investigated as protective factors for serious suicidal ideation (SSI) in young people with low perceived social belonging. Cross-sectional and longitudinal (12-month) analyses were performed using data from a representative European sample of 3256 students from the "Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe" study. Low social belonging was associated to SSI. However, reading books and watching films modera…
Does parental monitoring moderate the relationship between bullying and adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior? A community-based self-report study of adolescents in Germany
Victims of bullying show a substantial risk for engaging in self-harm behavior. Therefore, the dissemination of anti-bullying programs in schools would probably also prevent such disorders. Parental participation in school-based prevention may increase its effect; this also matches the results of the present study, showing that parental monitoring may be able to buffer the negative effects of bullying victimization, at least to a certain degree
Associations between depression and specific childhood experiences of abuse and neglect
Pathological Internet Use and Risk-Behaviors among European Adolescents
