Is higher-quality land developed earlier
Is higher-quality land developed earlier? To answer this question, the paper applies comparative static analysis to the Arnott–Lewis model of the transition of land from agricultural to urban use. It is shown that (i) an increase in agricultural fertility increases structural density and delays development; (ii) a decrease in land preparation cost reduces structural density and hastens development; and (iii) both an increase in amenities and a de…
The Panexponential Monocentric Model
Technological Progress in a Model of the Housing – Land Cycle
Social Welfare Underpinnings of Urban Bias and Unemployment
The reallocation of labour from rural to urban areas, although an historical concomitant of growth in per capita incomes, is widely viewed to be a troublesome process. It is a general belief that poor countries are somehow over-urbanised and migration excess'ive, that urban unemployment or underemployment is a problem, and that the investments to accommodate an expanding urban population are unjustifiably burdensome. Many governments have reacted…
Aggregate Land Rents and Aggregate Transport Costs
This paper explores the relationship between aggregate land rents and aggregate transport costs for land markets in which locations differ solely in terms of accessibility. That there exists a relationship between land rents and transport costs has been recognized at least since the time of von Thunen. The precise relationship between the two is, however, not generally well-understood. For instance, until quite recently it was considered correct …
The Transition of Land to Urban Use
This paper investigates the economics of the transition of land from rural to urban use. A simple model is employed to examine the developer's problem: When and at what destiny should vacant land be developed to maximize the present value of the Land? A series of rules emerges from the analysis to the timing and density of new development. In the latter half of the paper, the rules are tested against recent Canadian experience and peform well
