  • Slums and pandemics

Open Access•Luiz Brotherhood, Tiago Cavalcanti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2022•Citada por: 3•Referências: 2

How do slums shape the economic and health dynamics of pandemics? A difference-in-differences analysis using millions of mobile phones in Brazil shows that residents of overcrowded slums engaged in less social distancing after the outbreak of Covid-19. We develop and calibrate a choice-theoretic equilibrium model in which individuals are heterogeneous in income and some people live in high-density slums. Slum residents account for a disproportion…

  • Family Planning and Development

    Open Access•Tiago Cavalcanti, Georgi Kocharkov et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 36

What is the role of family planning interventions on fertility, savings, human capital investment and development? To examine this, endogenous unwanted fertility is embedded in an otherwise standard quantity–quality overlapping generations model of fertility and growth. The model features costly fertility control and families can (partially) insure against a fertility risk by using costly modern contraceptives. In the event of unexpected pregnanc…

  • On the Determinants of Slum Formation

Open Access•Tiago Cavalcanti, Daniel Da Mata et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Citada por: 9•Referências: 21

We construct a simple model of a city with heterogeneous agents and housing choice to explain the determinants of slums, home to about one-third of the urban population in developing countries. The model supports the main empirical evidence regarding slum formation and is able quantitatively to assess the role of each determinant of slum growth. We show that urban poverty, inequality and rural–urban migration explain much of the variation in slum…

  • The Output Cost of Gender Discrimination

    Open Access•Tiago Cavalcanti, José Tavares•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Citada por: 26•Referências: 38

We use a growth model in which saving, fertility and labour market participation are endogenous, to quantify the cost that barriers to female labour force participation impose in terms of an economy’s output. The model is calibrated to mimic the U.S. economy’s behavior in the long-run. We find that a 50 percent increase in the gender wage gap leads to a 35 percent decrease in income per capita in steady-state. Using independent estimates of the f…

  • Assessing the “Engines of Liberation”

Tiago Cavalcanti, Tiago V de V Cavalcanti et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2008

The secular rise in female labor force participation, highlighted in the recent macroe-conomics literature on growth and structural change, has been associated with the de-clining price and wider availability of home appliances. This paper uses a new and unique country dataset on the price of home appliances to test its impact on female labor supply. We assess the role of the price of appliances in raising participation by comparing it to the imp…
