Econometrics and Economic Theory in the 20th Century
Deficit Targeting Strategies
Using stochastic simulations, this article analyses the probability distribution of a country's deficit ratio under fixed exchange rates and a variety of monetary and fiscal policy rules. The purpose is to show how the probability of an ‘excessive deficit’, defined by Europe's Stability Pact as a deficit to GDP ratio above 3 per cent, varies with different deficit targets and policy rules. Using a macro model, we find that when subject to histori…
The Single Currency and Labour Market Flexibility
This paper examines the macroeconomic consequences of rigidities in the European labour markets, and shows that attempts to impose a single monetary regime on economies with different structures can lead to a breakdown in co‐ordination. Such breakdowns can occur when expenditure‐switching effects are dominated by the income effects of greater policy discipline. Market flexibility should therefore be given greater importance than the process of po…

Stabilising commodity earnings when there is uncertainty about the price and production distributions
Most of the literature on risk reduction associated with price and production uncertainties has been concerned with the welfare justification for, and welfare consequences of, market stabilisation. This article deals with the important problem of how to stabilise earnings in a market where prices are volatile and production is uncertain, once the welfare case for doing so had been accepted. Based on a sample of four representative commodity marke…
Price Discipline, Output Costs and Exchange Rate Stabilisation
Stabilizing Speculative Commodity Markets
This book reviews the problems caused by commodity price instability and develops a mathematical model for commodity markets. The implications of this model for intervention and the welfare effects are then considered. A fully developed model of the world copper market is used to investigate alternative buffer stock intervention rules in order to assess the scope and limitations of such stabilization strategies
Commodity market stabilisation and ‘North-South’ income transfers
Applied Decision Analysis and Economic Behaviour
The fortress of econometrics has often been laid siege to from one or a few sides only.According to their inspiration or inclination, authors have laid stress on model specification, parameter estimation, testing and prediction or more generally the use of models (prediction in particular being a rare bird in econometric literature).Special topics, such as errors in the variables, missing observations, multi-dimensional data, time-series analysis…
