  • The Oxford Handbook of Productivity Analysis

Laurens Cherchye, Bram De Rock et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Productivity…•2018

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in the two decades preceding 2014 two member countries, Italy and Spain, experienced productivity decline, while just four member countries, Korea, Ireland, Finland, and the United States, managed to achieve rates of productivity growth in excess of one percent per annum. Rates of productivity growth slowed following the global financial crisis in nearly all member co…

This book is an update of the 1993 publication of The Measurement of Productive Efficiency: Techniques and Applications. The same editors have here compiled over ten years of the most recent research in this changing field, and expanded on those seminal chapters and written this new edition. The book guides from the basic models to the latest, cutting-edge extensions, and is reinforced by references to classic and current theoretical and applied …

Modern textbook presentations of production economics typically treat producers as successful optimizers. Conventional econometric practice has generally followed this paradigm, and least squares based regression techniques have been used to estimate production, cost, profit and other functions. In such a framework deviations from maximum output, from minimum cost and cost minimizing input demands, and from maximum profit and profit maximizing ou…

  • Econometric Estimation of Technical and Environmental Efficiency

    Open Access•Stijn Reinhard, C A Knox Lovell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Agricultural…•1999

In this article we estimate the technical and environmental efficiency of a panel of Dutch dairy farms. Nitrogen surplus, arising from the application of excessive amounts of manure and chemical fertilizer, is treated as an environmentally detrimental input. A stochastic translog production frontier is specified to estimate the output‐oriented technical efficiency. Environmental efficiency is estimated as the input‐oriented technical efficiency o…

  • Modelling Scale Economies with Ray-Homothetic Production Functions

Rolf Färe, Leif Jansson et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1985

Ray-homotheticity is proposed as a fruitful way of modelling scale economies. It permits scale economies to vary with the rate of output and the input mix, thus allowing ideal output to be input mix-dependent. Our empirical results illustrate the value of ray-homotheticity as a generalization of both homotheticity and ray-homogeneity. They also shed some light on the use of Wald and likelihood ratio tests for hypothesis testing in nested nonlinea…

N recent years a great deal of research has been directed to the modelling and measurement of technical and allocative efficiency in production. With few exceptions this research has been restricted to single-product firms.' However, recent developments in duality theory have facilitated the extension of this research to multi-product firms. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a model of the multiproduct firm in which the possibilities o…

    C A Knox Lovell•ARTICLE•Economica•1966

The proposals of Evsei Liberman for the installation of incentive payments to Soviet enterprises based on profitability have evoked a continuous stream of controversy on both sides of the Iron Curtain. In a recent article,2 Stephen Merrett argues that Liberman's proposals cannot function as an efficient criterion of enterprise management reward. The purpose of this Comment is to show that Merrett's conclusion does not necessarily follow from Libe…
