Heterogeneous effects of cyclones on households’ welfare
Satan's Luckless Harp
Founded in 1831, Abner Kneeland's freethought newspaper The Boston Investigator was a thorn in the side of Boston's elite for decades, providing what amounted to a "weekly national correspondence school" to middle-class readers all over the US (French 215). While Kneeland's paper gained attention with controversial articles on subjects such as atheism, labor, and birth control, what is often overlooked is its frequent printing of freethought poet…
Observing system needs for understanding carbon–climate feedbacks
Carbon–climate (CC) feedbacks — arising from response of land and ocean carbon sinks to elevated CO 2 and climate warming — are critical yet highly uncertain drivers of Earth’s climate trajectory. Processes such as permafrost thaw, tropical forest dieback, reduced ocean uptake, and intensifying climate extremes are already weakening natural carbon sinks, with potential to amplify warming and accelerate crossing of tipping points. Detecting and qu…
Thermal stress in degraded forests in the Brazilian Amazon Arc of Deforestation
Understanding thermal stress in tropical forests has taken on new urgency in light of accelerating climate change and expansion of deforestation and forest degradation. Degraded tropical forests in particular may be approaching critical temperature thresholds even more rapidly than intact forests, with implications for tree survival and ecosystem recovery. We investigate thermal stress in degraded tropical forests within the Brazilian Amazon Arc …
Degradation and deforestation increase the sensitivity of the Amazon Forest to climate extremes
About 40% of the Brazilian Amazon has been deforested or suffered changes in forest structure through degradation (selective logging, fires, and fragmentation). The impact of forest degradation on the forest’s sensitivity to climate extremes has not been fully explored because of a lack of data and the complex interplay of forest structure and climate drivers. Here, we combined forest structure data from 545 airborne lidar transects (375 ha each)…
Understanding How Economic Growth Dimensions Influence Multidimensional Poverty
Island idleness
The labour market is fundamental for economic growth, which makes an in‐depth understanding of its dynamics crucial for development and poverty reduction. One determinant of labour market outcomes are remittances. Remittances can influence the decision of an individual whether to participate in the labour market or not, which makes it necessary to understand this relation. In this study we assessed the impact of remittances on the labour supply i…
The macroeconomic impact of Covid‐19 in Mozambique
This study assesses the economic costs of COVID‐19 and the state of emergency implemented by the Government of Mozambique. We use a social accounting matrix multiplier analysis to estimate the effects of the pandemic on the economy. Our simulations suggest that the Mozambican economy lost 3.6 percentage points of GDP growth in 2020 and that employment was 1.9 percentage points down. These losses were primarily driven by export shocks, the most he…
The impact of Covid‐19 on consumption poverty in Mozambique
This study assesses the impact of COVID‐19 on household consumption poverty. To predict changes in income and the associated effects on poverty, we rely on existing estimated macroeconomic impacts. We assume two main impact channels: direct income/wage and employment losses. Our simulations suggest that consumption decreased by 7.1%–14.4% and that poverty increased by 4.3–9.9 percentage points in 2020. This points to a reversal of the positive po…
Resource Discovery and the Political Fortunes of National Leaders
We investigate the causal effects of giant and first oil and mineral discoveries on the political fortunes of national leaders using a large dataset of 1255 leaders in 158 countries over the period 1950 to 2010 in single‐risk and multiple‐risk discrete time proportional hazard models. We find that mineral discoveries reduce risk for the incumbent in a single‐risk model especially in a non‐election year. In contrast, oil discoveries reduce risk di…
Quantifying long-term changes in carbon stocks and forest structure from Amazon forest degradation
Despite sustained declines in Amazon deforestation, forest degradation from logging and firecontinues to threaten carbon stocks, habitat, and biodiversity in frontier forests along the Amazon arcof deforestation. Limited data on the magnitude of carbon losses and rates of carbon recoveryfollowing forest degradation have hindered carbon accounting efforts and contributed to incompletenational reporting to reduce emissions from deforestation and fo…
The Amazon basin in transition
Selective Logging in the Brazilian Amazon
Amazon deforestation has been measured by remote sensing for three decades. In comparison, selective logging has been mostly invisible to satellites. We developed a large-scale, high-resolution, automated remote-sensing analysis of selective logging in the top five timber-producing states of the Brazilian Amazon. Logged areas ranged from 12,075 to 19,823 square kilometers per year (±14%) between 1999 and 2002, equivalent to 60 to 123% of previous…
Economics of scientific and biomedical journals
The emergence of e–journals brought a great change in scholarly communication and in the behavior of scholars. However, the importance of scholars’ behavior in the pricing of scientific journal has been largely ignored in the recent debate between libraries and publishers over site license practices and pricing schemes. Stanford’s survey results indicate that sharply increasing costs are the main reason for individual subscription cancellation, d…
What is a library anymore, anyway
Libraries in the future will undertake local control, especially for long-term preservation and accessibility of digital as well as analog collections. Failure to embrace that role would cause libraries and librarians rapidly to lose relevance and value as Internet and other digital resources develop. Local control of collections is critical both to assure permanence and to provide a key degree of selectivity, which ? contrary to the irrational e…
The Unknown Audience
The dramatic increase in the number of radio stations in Germany over the past few years and the coincidental growth of competition have confronted German radio researchers with new challenges concerning contents and methodology. Increased competition has demanded a more precise measurement of the audience's needs and wishes. At the same time the growing complexity must be matched by a corresponding multivariate approach to data analysis. This st…
