  • Case for Closing Superintendent Gender Gap

    Open Access•Rachel S White, Lauren C McKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2026•Referências: 6

This brief considers how closing the superintendent gender gap may contribute to the strengthening of early childhood education (ECE) leadership. Using data from a national survey of superintendents, we find that women are significantly more likely than men to prioritize prekindergarten (pre-K) initiatives, even after controlling for ECE background and training and district characteristics. These gender differences are amplified among leaders wit…

  • A Synthesis of Research on Principal Internships

Open Access•Virginia Snodgrass Rangel, Timothy A Drake et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2025

The internship is a crucial component of principal preparation. This systematic research review aims to build on two prior syntheses of existing research on principal internships. We employed an exhaustive review of five search engines for empirical studies on principal internships in the United States between 2010 and 2023. Our search yielded 92 studies. We extracted key characteristics from each study as well as the main findings. We distribute…

  • Preparing Early Education Leaders

    Open Access•Michael Little, Timothy A Drake et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Administration…•2024

Purpose: Recently, a confluence of factors has focused elementary school leaders on early education. One factor is that nearly 60 percent of all public elementary schools in the U.S. today have a Pre-K program in the building. Yet, prior research reveals that leaders are often not prepared to effectively lead early education programs. This study assesses the current state of early education leadership preparation among UCEA-affiliated programs. M…

  • Isolated or Integrated? Tracing the Principal Mentor–Intern Relationship across an Academic Year

    Open Access•Timothy A Drake, Lacey E Seaton et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

High-quality principal internships are defined, in part, by support from high-quality principal mentors. We traced the development and quality of principal mentor–intern relationships during an academic school year and found that mentors played a significant role in determining the extent to which interns were isolated or integrated into the school leadership team. Specifically, mentors influenced (1) the types of tasks and activities interns wer…

  • School Leader Apprenticeships

    Open Access•Kevin C Bastian, Timothy A Drake•ARTICLE•Educational Administration…•2023

Background: Recent empirical work shows that student teaching in a high-quality learning environment and with a highly effective cooperating teacher predicts the performance and retention of early-career teachers. Little is known about principal internships and their impacts on school leader outcomes. Purpose: To examine the characteristics of principal interns, internship schools, and mentor principals. Setting: Principal preparation programs an…

  • Central Office Supports for Data-Driven Talent Management Decisions

    Open Access•Jason A Grissom, Mollie Rubin et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2017•Citada por: 3•Referências: 32

School districts increasingly push school leaders to utilize multiple measures of teacher effectiveness, such as observation ratings or value-added scores, in making talent management decisions, including teacher hiring, assignment, support, and retention, but we know little about the local conditions that promote or impede these processes. We investigate the barriers to principals’ use of teacher effectiveness measures in eight urban districts a…

  • Make Room Value Added

    Open Access•Ellen Goldring, Jason A Grissom et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2015•Citada por: 24•Referências: 13

Increasingly, states and districts are combining student growth measures with rigorous, rubric-aligned teacher observations in constructing teacher evaluation measures. Although the student growth or value-added components of these measures have received much research and policy attention, the results of this study suggest that the data generated by high-quality observation systems have potential to inform principals’ use of data for human capita…

  • The Effect of Community Linguistic Isolation on Language-Minority Student Achievement in High School

    Open Access•Timothy A Drake•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2014•Citada por: 6•Referências: 44

Research on language-minority student outcomes has revealed sizeable and persistent achievement gaps. The reasons for these gaps are often closely linked with other factors related to underperformance, including generational status, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Using sociocultural second-language acquisition theories and community linguistic capital as a theoretical frame, this study builds upon the extant literature to examine the r…

  • U.S. Comparative and International Graduate Programs

    Timothy A Drake•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2011•Referências: 5

Previous work has concentrated on the epistemological foundation of comparative and international education (CIE) graduate programs. This study focuses on programmatic size, philosophy, methodology, and pedagogy. It begins by reviewing previous studies. It then provides a theoretical framework and describes the size, relevance, content, and methodological approaches of U.S.-based graduate programs. This study finds that (a) CIE graduate programs …
