Mediating learning with mobile devices through pedagogical innovation
This article presents a quantitative study demonstrating that digital pedagogy using mobile devices (e.g., laptops, mobile phones, tablets) impacts teachers' perceptions of pedagogical innovation. We further find that innovative mobile pedagogy adoption positively impacts teachers' perceptions of improved student learning in K-12 settings. Examining teachers' perceptions of pedagogical innovation in digital practice is important as researchers ha…
Scrutinising the Digital Pedagogies of Teachers With Contrasting Views of Students’ Remote Learning Experiences During the Covid-19 Pandemic
This article discusses a survey of Australian teachers ( n = 297) that elicited their views of teaching and learning during the COVID-19 emergency remote schooling periods. The research identifies differences in teachers’ views of their students’ learning experiences and finds that the groups with the greatest contrast in such views reported using distinctly different digital pedagogies. Participants with extremely negative views of their student…
Effective practices during emergency school lockdowns
This study investigates common features of a set of diverse schools’ responses to the initial school lockdown period during the pandemic in 2020, with a focus on practices supporting learning, inclusion and wellbeing. It comprises a collective case study of four Australian schools that were selected based on their reputation for impactful support of students and teachers during the emergency remote teaching period. Methods included interviews and…
Teachers’ Experiences of Emergency Remote Schooling During the Pandemic
This article discusses findings from a recent survey ( n = 297) of teachers’ views of both their own and their students’ experiences during the 2021 enforced emergency remote schooling period occurring in New South Wales Australia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The quantitative analysis reported here explores teachers’ views regarding teaching and learning during this challenging period. It identifies three latent constructs, learning, assessment…
Digital pedagogies for future school education
This article develops four school education scenarios to help educators consider the role of digital technologies in future teaching and to provoke discussion of how education might be done differently. The context for these scenarios is a world shaped by the COVID19 pandemic. The development of education scenarios is a useful device for thinking about the future and is often used as a methodology to stimulate discussion about possible variations…

The iPAC Scale
This paper develops and examines a scale to capture teachers' views of the mobile pedagogies they are adopting. Mobile pedagogies refer to the practices and approaches teachers use that involve mobile technologies to support learning. A mobile technology is any portable, handheld technology that potentially supports learning and includes laptops, tablets and smartphones. This study develops a rigorous scale to capture mobile pedagogies adopted in…

Needs and expectations of a new learning space
Much of the literature on university learning spaces focuses on the undergraduate student experience, neglecting experiences of research students in new spaces. This article is concerned with research students’ needs and expectations of a learning space. It focuses on a recently opened shared activity-based learning space that was specifically built for research students. The methodological focus draws on case study methods and hermeneutic phenom…
How do early career teachers value different types of support? A scale-adjusted latent class choice model
Teachers Choosing Rich Tasks
This article reports on the pioneering use in education of Discrete Choice Experiments (DCEs) to assess teachers’ decisions regarding deployment of rich tasks. The incorporation of this quantitative method into what is usually considered the domain of qualitative researchers is an innovative feature of this study. The DCEs enabled rigorous, reliable, and efficient investigation of the relationships between attributes of the complex environment in…
Teacher Retention and Attrition
The provision and maintenance of quality teachers is a matter of priority for the profession. Moreover, teacher attrition is costly to the profession, to the community and to those teachers who leave feeling disillusioned. There is a need to investigate the experiences of early career teachers to consider how these issues contribute to decisions about staying in or leaving the profession. This paper reports on an aspect of a larger study on teach…
Spotlight on authentic learning
The recent convergence of video and computer technologies presents new opportunities and challenges in education. Video production resources such as cameras and video editing software are now widely available in many schools and homes. The ease of use of these resources has encouraged teachers to use them across the curriculum with students of all ages. Furthermore, students often find this work exhilarating and perceive these tasks as deeply rel…
Self-Study, Critical Friendship, and the Complexities of Teacher Education
When the right hand washes the left, the right hand comes clean too. (Nigerian [Igbo] proverb) The notion of critical friendship is central to self-study. A critical friend acts as a sounding board, asks challenging questions, supports reframing of events, and joins in the professional learning experience. In this paper, we share our experiences of acting as critical friends for each other in two separate self-studies of practice. We discuss what…
Web-based conferencing
Educators are increasingly engaging in innovative practices which use the World Wide Web as a pedagogical tool. One aspect of Web usage which shows promise of enhancing learning is that of Web-based conferencing. This paper describes an intervention in which the authors used a Web-based conferencing tool to promote dialogue within an international community of mathematics educators and prospective school teachers on the nature of mathematics and …
