What do adults know about public education
Adults’ beliefs and knowledge about the state of the U.S. education system drive decisions about policy, funding, program adoption, student participation in programs, and the selection of decision makers to elected positions. Amie Rapaport and Anna Rosefsky Saavedra share national survey data showing that U.S. adults have little knowledge about what is being taught in schools, express neutrality about belief systems undergirding education policy,…
The Subjective Value of Postsecondary Education in the Time of Covid: Evidence from a Nationally Representative Panel
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected virtually all aspects of US life. It has disrupted education and employment and may have shifted the trade-off between employment and higher education in prospective students’ minds. The pandemic may have especially disrupted the educational trajectories of traditionally underserved postsecondary students, such as those from low-income and/or racially minoritized backgrounds, who often work while pursuing their …
The Impact of a Messaging Intervention on Parents’ School Hesitancy During Covid-19
Throughout the 2020–2021 school year, families’ access to—and desire to participate in—in-person educational experiences was highly unequal. Concerns about “school hesitancy” in light of COVID-19 have continued into the 2021–2022 school year, driven both by concerns about well-being and concerns about safety. Using a nationally representative sample of families, we tested a messaging intervention aimed at reducing school hesitancy. We found that …
Project-based learning in AP classrooms: Lessons from research
A team of researchers wanted to learn whether AP teachers using a project-based learning (PBL) approach could develop students’ deep learning of knowledge and skills while preparing them for their AP exams. They used a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the Knowledge in Action (KIA) project-based curricula for AP courses. KIA students outperformed non-KIA students on AP exams, including within subgroups. Though the shift to PBL required cons…
Students’ Civic Online Reasoning: A National Portrait
Are today’s students able to discern quality information from sham online? In the largest investigation of its kind, we administered an assessment to 3,446 high school students. Equipped with a live internet connection, the students responded to six constructed-response tasks. The students struggled on all of them. Asked to investigate a site claiming to “disseminate factual reports” on climate science, 96% never learned about the organization’s …
Academic Civic Mindedness and Model Citizenship in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
This study uses interview and survey methods to describe the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme's (DP) development of students' “academic civic mindedness” and “model citizenship” at four public schools in California. Results indicate that the DP pedagogy enables students to develop many of the skills that are necessary for civic advocacy and that the DP places a strong emphasis on students' knowledge of issues related to public p…
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Mexico as preparation for higher education
In this study we analyse the relationship between Mexican students’ enrolment in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and their college preparedness using a case-study methodology. We found that from the Mexican schools that offer the IB DP, most IB students are fairly successful in their college applications, such that the majority enrols at among the most well-regarded post-secondary institutions in Mexico. The possibilit…
