An Exploratory Study on Governing Displaced Animals in a Cat Shelter in Japan
Risk-based versus storyline approaches for global warming impact assessment on basin-averaged extreme rainfall
Two methods exist to address the degree to which past extreme events and associated disasters will be intensified due to climate change: storyline approaches and risk-based approaches. However, the risk-based approach applied to weather similar to the target event (typhoons, a stationary weather front,...etc) becomes theoretically similar to the storyline approach. We examine this theory for the climate change impact of a real event, Typhoon Hagi…
Global land use of diets in a small island community
Modern dietary habits in communities are linked and are part of the global food supply chain. To achieve sustainable food production and consumption, communicating the impact associated with food production and dietary choices at community level to consumers is important. However, previous footprint studies have primarily focussed on food consumption at the national level and neglected community–level consumption activities. This study surveyed t…
How urbanization enhanced exposure to climate risks in the Pacific
The increasing risk of coastal flooding and water shortage in Pacific Island Countries is usually attributed to climate change hazards. This ignores other risk components, exposure and vulnerability, of which a major contributor is urbanization. We develop simplified analyses that can be applied to other PICs. By dividing climate risks into hazard and exposure components we determine how urbanization contributed to present-day risks and then pred…
Institutionalization of competition-based funding under neoliberalism in East Asia
This study analyzes and discusses how competition-based funding has been institutionalized in the three North East Asian countries of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan since the neoliberal reforms in the 1990s. We found that states set aside additional, ‘competition-based’ funding for distribution among higher education institutions. In addition, private universities have emerged as winners at the zero-sum game because their management styles are much mor…
Efficiency and sustainability of land-resource use on a small island
Land resources are essential for humans to survive, and different methods of land- resource use depend largely on the local natural context and society. Here we propose a method to assess land-resource use in terms of efficiency and sustainability for three historical types of land-resource use in the Babeldaob Island, Republic of Palau: self-supply, resource development and nature conservation. Our proposed index of land-use efficiency makes com…
Effects of αβ-Blocker Versus β1-Blocker Treatment on Heart Rate Response During Incremental Cardiopulmonary Exercise in Japanese Male Patients with Subacute Myocardial Infarction
A simplified substitute for heart rate (HR) at the anaerobic threshold (AT), i.e., resting HR plus 30 beats per minute or a percentage of predicted maximum HR, is used as a way to determine exercise intensity without cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) data. However, difficulties arise when using this method in subacute myocardial infarction (MI) patients undergoing beta-blocker therapy. This study compared the effects of αβ-blocker and β1-blo…
Relationship between Daytime Sleepiness and Health Utility in Patients after Cardiac Surgery
Background Daytime sleepiness can be assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), which is widely used in the field of sleep medicine as a subjective measure of a patient's sleepiness. Also, health utility assessed by the mean Short-Form Six-Dimension (SF-6D) score, one of several preference-based utility measures, is an important measure in health care. We aimed to examine age-related differences in daytime sleepiness and health utility and t…
“Prince Charming Syndrome?” Gender gap in preferences for defined contribution pensions in Japan
Using survey data collected by the Japan Institute of Life Insurance in 2002, this study finds that a significant gender gap existed in defined contribution (DC) pension knowledge among workers employed at small- to medium-sized private firms in Japan. Even with similar DC knowledge, however, men and women reveal different preferences for DC pensions, indicating that their perceptional responses may widely differ from actual behaviors. Apart from…
Quantifying the effect of autonomous adaptation to global river flood projections
This study represents the first attempt to quantify the effects of autonomous adaptation on the projection of global flood hazards and to assess future flood risk by including this effect. A vulnerability scenario, which varies according to the autonomous adaptation effect for conventional disaster mitigation efforts, was developed based on historical vulnerability values derived from flood damage records and a river inundation simulation. Couple…
Self-image and Missions of Universities
As universities in Japan gain institutional autonomy in managing internal organizations, independent of governmental control as a result of deregulation and decentralizing reforms, it is becoming increasingly important that the executives and administrators of each institution demonstrate clear and strategic vision and ideas to external stakeholders, in order to maintain financially robust operations and attractiveness of their institutions. This…
Historical Praxis in a Depopulating and aging Village in Japan
The residents in many of the villages in hilly or mountainous areas in contemporary Japan have to confront pessimistic prospects on their life conditions. They are suffering from irreversible depopulation and ageing, the decline of the local economy, and the deterioration of farming land and forest. In this situation, a mind-set that the current and future situation cannot be improved prevails among the residents. By exploring the discourse and a…

Where Do They Belong in the Job Markets?” Emerging Career Issues of Public Policy Program Graduates in Japan
The emergence of Japanese professional schools began in 2003 as part of the government-led university education reform. As the newly launched public policy schools continue to produce policy professionals each year, finding career opportunities for prospective graduates has become an important institutional agenda. This paper attempts to clarify critical issues currently faced by Japanese public policy schools and their graduates, particularly fr…
Aging and decision making
This study investigates the characteristics of the risky‐choice framing effect among older adults (more than 65 years of age) in comparison to younger adults. Data from a questionnaire survey with randomly sampled participants from voter lists in two cities in northern Japan were reanalyzed. Wang's (1996 ) definition of the risky‐choice framing effect was applied for analyzing data. The younger group showed a typical risky‐choice framing effect, …

Brain Activation Associated With Changes in Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, and Plasma Catecholamines During Rectal Distention
Objective: To test the hypothesis that gut stimulation provokes autonomic arousal via activation of regional cerebral cortices. How the human brain processes interoceptive signals and forms initial autonomic arousal is one of the key questions to be answered in research on emotion. Methods: Twelve healthy males participated in this study. A barostat bag was inserted in the rectum and intermittently inflated with 0, 20, or 40 mm Hg at random for 8…
Effectiveness of 2-Year Colleges and the Performance of Their Graduates in the Japanese Labor Market
Japanese and U.S. programs in Taiwan
Recent deregulation in Taiwan, including the lifting of a ban against Japanese programs and the authorization of commercial CATV, has resulted in a rapid increase in the number of foreign programs. After reviewing the unique broadcasting history of Taiwan, this study examines exposure to and preference for foreign programs based on a nationwide survey. The findings demonstrate that, in addition to social status, historical and cultural background…
