  • Afterschool programs, extracurricular activities, and unsupervised time

Deborah L Vandell, Sandra D Simpkin et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2022

Patterns of afterschool activities were studied in low-income, ethnically diverse children (n = 1796, M age = 8.7 yrs). Cluster analyses indicated four reliable clusters: (a) regular participation in a high-quality afterschool program, (b) regular participation at the afterschool program combined with other extracurricular activities, (c) unsupervised time afterschool combined with extracurricular activities, and (d) low participation in any of t…

  • Cumulative and Differential Effects of Early Child Care and Middle Childhood Out-of-School Time on Adolescent Functioning

    Open Access•Deborah L Vandell, Kenneth T H Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2020

Effects associated with early child care and out-of-school time (OST) during middle childhood were examined in a large sample of U.S. adolescents (N = 958). Both higher quality early child care AND more epochs of organized activities (afterschool programs and extracurricular activities) during middle childhood were linked to higher academic achievement at age 15. Differential associations were found in the behavioral domain. Higher quality early …

  • Early child care and adolescent functioning at the end of high school

    Deborah L Vandell, Margaret Burchinal et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2016•Citada por: 24•Referências: 6

Relations between early child care and adolescent functioning at the end of high school (EOHS; M age = 18.3 years) were examined in a prospective longitudinal study of 1,214 children. Controlling for extensive measures of family background, early child care was associated with academic standing and behavioral adjustment at the EOHS. More experience in center-type care was linked to higher class rank and admission to more selective colleges, and f…

  • Relational Aggression in Middle Childhood

    Open Access•Susan Spieker, Susan B Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2011•Citada por: 5•Referências: 9

This study examined gender differences in the level and developmental course of relational aggression in middle childhood, as well as early predictors and outcomes of relational aggression, after controlling for concurrent physical aggression. Relational (RAgg) and Physical aggression (PAgg) scores for 558 boys and 545 girls at ages 8-11 in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD) were created by combining the highest ra…

  • Family Socioeconomic Status and Consistent Environmental Stimulation in Early Childhood

Open Access•R Crosnoe, Tama Leventhal et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2010

The transition into school occurs at the intersection of multiple environmental settings. This study applied growth curve modeling to a sample of 1,364 American children, followed from birth through age 6, who had been categorized by their exposure to cognitive stimulation at home and in preschool child care and 1st-grade classrooms. Of special interest was the unique and combined contribution to early learning of these 3 settings. Net of socioec…

  • Specific Features of After‐School Program Quality

    Open Access•Kim M Pierce, Daniel M Bolt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2010•Citada por: 17•Referências: 23

This longitudinal study examined associations between three after‐school program quality features (positive staff–child relations, available activities, programming flexibility) and child developmental outcomes (reading and math grades, work habits, and social skills with peers) in Grade 2 and then Grade 3. Participants ( n = 120 in Grade 2, n = 91 in Grade 3) attended after‐school programs more than 4 days per week, on average. Controlling for c…
