  • Supporting children’s engagement through learning experience design, situational interest, and user experience

Open Access•Joseph T Wong, Jessica Cai et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Technology Research…•2026

With the prevalence of digital technologies in the classrooms, educators continue to seek ways to augment traditional in-person teaching with the benefits of educational technologies, utilizing blended learning approaches. This study investigates the role of learning experience design (LXD) in supporting children’s engagement in blended, video-based math lessons on proportional reasoning. The research focuses on operationalizing LXD through the i…

  • Enhancing Flexible Transfer of Fractions

    Open Access•Kreshnik N Begolli, Siling Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2026•Referências: 74

We codesigned and evaluated a brief intervention combining two fraction games: Fraction Ball (played on a basketball court) and Bottle Caps Bonanza (played on a tabletop shuffleboard). Using participatory design principles, we engaged teachers and students in codesigning playful learning experiences aimed at improving knowledge transfer and adding fractions with unlike denominators. Students were randomly assigned within seven treatment classroom…

  • Worked examples moderate the effect of math learning anxiety on children’s math learning and engagement during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Almaz Mesghina, Elayne Vollman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2024

  • Children’s Early Spontaneous Comparisons Predict Later Analogical Reasoning Skills

Open Access•Catriona Silvey, Dedre Gentner et al.•ARTICLE•Open MIND•2023

Laboratory studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of making comparisons on children’s analogical reasoning skills. We extend this finding to an observational dataset comprising 42 children. The prevalence of specific comparisons, which identify a feature of similarity or difference, in children’s spontaneous speech from 14–58 months is associated with higher scores in tests of verbal and non-verbal analogy in 6th grade. We test two pre-regi…

  • Fraction ball

Andres S Bustamante, Kreshnik N Begolli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2022

Fraction and decimal number learning are notoriously difficult for elementary-aged students. Fraction Ball represents a new way to engage children in fraction and decimal number learning that is playful, engaging, embodied, physically active, and rooted in cognitive science research. In our work, we provide evidence for the efficacy of Fraction Ball in promoting rational number learning through a rigorous experimental design. We also demonstrate …

  • Why do children struggle on analogical reasoning tasks? Considering the role of problem format by measuring visual attention

    Open Access•Katharine F Guarino, Elizabeth M Wakefield et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2022

Given the importance of analogical reasoning to bootstrapping children's understanding of the world, why is this ability so challenging for children? Two common sources of error have been implicated: 1) children's inability to prioritize relational information during initial problem solving; 2) children's inability to disengage from salient distractors. Here, we use eye tracking to examine children and adults' looking patterns when solving scene …

  • A cultural lens on Yucatec Maya families’ Covid-19 experiences

Open Access•Lucía Alcalá, Suzanne Gaskin et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2021

Health guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic led families around the world to spend more time isolated together, disrupting leisure activities, schooling, social interactions, and family work (UNICEF, 2021). Using the lens of Yucatec Maya families’ cultural values and practices, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 Yucatec Maya rural women in Mexico (Mage = 32; and for comparison, 13 middle-class European-American women (Mage = 41)),…

  • Personal narrative as a “breeding ground” for higher-order thinking talk in early parent–child interactions

    Open Access•Rebecca R Frausel, Lindsey E Richland et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2021•Referências: 8

Personal narrative is decontextualized talk where individuals recount stories of personal experiences about past or future events. As an everyday discursive speech type, narrative potentially invites parents and children to explicitly link together, generalize from, and make inferences about representations-i.e., to engage in higher-order thinking talk (HOTT). Here we ask whether narratives in early parent-child interactions include proportionall…

  • The origins of higher-order thinking lie in children's spontaneous talk across the pre-school years

Open Access•Rebecca R Frausel, Catriona Silvey et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2020
