An Econometric Model of Migration Between US Metropolitan Areas
We test a model of inter-metropolitan migration using 1965-70 data for 284 metropolitan areas from the 1970 Census of Population. Innovations in model specification permit us to derive estimatable equations for gross in- and out-migration from a point-to-point hypothesis. Measures of economic conditions (the unemployment rate, the growth rate in employment, and the wage rate) are shown to affect migration behaviour both at origins and destination…

An Econometric Model of Employment Growth in US Metropolitan Areas
This paper reports on tests of hypotheses about the determinants of employment growth in US metropolitan areas. All urban employment covered by Social Security is included; the hypotheses are tested for each of forty groups of four-digit SIC industries. The units of observation are 284 areas, including all SMS As, as of 1970, plus some smaller places. The period is 1965-1970. The two main findings are: First, ease of attracting labor is not shown…
