  • Canons and interpretative communities

John Jørgensen, John Bagterp Jørgensen•ARTICLE•Studies in Chinese Religions•2024

Canons are created by interpretative communities, which in China meant by eminent monks favoured by the court, who, with possibly two exceptions, sponsored the tripiṭaka. The Chinese tripiṭakas were constituted of Buddhist scriptures translated from Indic languages, but supplements that included mostly non-sectarian works by Chinese deemed beneficial to Buddhism were allowed. Several Chan texts were included in such supplements from the Song Dyna…

  • Setting the Scene

John Alexander Jorgensen, John Jørgensen•CHAPTER•The Awakening of Faith and New…•2021

From the late-nineteenth century, Yang Wenhui attempted to revive Chinese Buddhism, which had been in decay for centuries, by publishing core doctrinal texts, chief among them the Treatise on Awakening Mahāyāna Faith. The Treatise was to be the basis of this reformed Buddhism because it concentrated on faith and provided for access to the Pure Land, thereby countering the inroads of Japanese Buddhism and Christianity. In 1922, however, his studen…

  • The Radiant Mind

John Jørgensen, John Bagterp Jørgensen•BOOK•Buddhist Roots of Zhu Xi's…•2018

This chapter identifies and highlights aspects of Buddhist thought that Zhu Xi appropriated and adapted to bolster and develop his philosophy of mind. The author argues that even though Zhu Xi repudiated the Buddhism he had been trained in as a youth, he continued to mirror many Buddhist doctrines as he responded to agendas already well-established in Buddhist circles. The chapter’s focus is Zhu Xi’s choice of the term “lucid radiance” ( xuming )…

  • Currents and Countercurrents

Jonathan W Best, Jr Buswell et al.•BOOK•Currents and Countercurrents•2017

Soon after the inception of Buddhism in the sixth or fifth century B.C.E., the Buddha ordered his small band of monks to wander forth for the welfare and weal of the many, a command that initiated one of the greatest missionary movements in world religious history. But this account of a monolithic missionary movement spreading outward from the Buddhist homeland of India across the Asian continent is just one part of the story. The case of East As…

  • Inventing Hui-neng, the Sixth Patriarch

John Jørgensen, John Bagterp Jørgensen•BOOK•Inventing Hui-neng, the Sixth…•2005

It was through the propaganda of Shen-hui (684-758) that Hui-neng (d. 710) became the also today still towering figure of sixth patriarch of Ch’an/Zen Buddhism, and accepted as the ancestor or founder of all subsequent Ch’an lineages. The first part of the book analyses the creation of the image of Hui-neng and the worship of a lacquered mummy said to be that of Hui-neng. Using the life of Confucius as a template for its structure, Shen-hui inven…
