There are three teacher training institutions in the State of Washington, each known as a College of Education. Their enrollment runs from 745 to 974. Two of the institutions offer both French and German, one offers only French. As in the case of the junior colleges, the other foreign languages are absolutely neglected. Curtis C D Vail•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1936

it has been patent that agreement on the matter of minimum or basic word lists is essential.3 Firstly, therefore, the following correlation gives New York State teachers of German in the secondary schools the opportunity to strive toward national as well as local criteria, by merely adding to their lists the words listed below which appear on the AATG List but are not contained in the NYS List. Curtis C D Vail•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1932

AT the last meeting of the Western New York Branch of The American Association of Teachers of German the feeling was expressed that the present New York State Tentative Syllabus in Modern Languages might be bettered in many respects as far as the German portion was concerned. The French Syllabus, especially, seemed to be an excellent piece of work and it appeared scarcely fitting that the German teachers should lag behind their French colleagues …

MucH has been done of late through the medium of articles, surveys, and other publicity in the way of advocating the restoration of German to those High School curricula in which it has been discontinued since the World War. While much good has indubitably been accomplished, the full force of the problem was not apparent to the writer until asked to participate in making a survey of the situation in western New York. As a result of this participa…

  • German in the Smaller High Schools

    Curtis C D Vail•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1929

Surveys portraying the condition of German in both earlier and more recent years throughout the United States at large, within the individual states, and in the larger cities have been presented in these pages. Most heartening have been the results derived, especially from the larger cities. However, it seems that the sma…
