  • Practising the Future against Perception

    Open Access•B S Holst, N G Mollerup•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2025•Referências: 2

This article explores how young Syrian men in Jordan perceived and practised the future in extreme material, social and rights-related precarity in the time before the fall of the Assad-regime. We introduce the notion of the 'future as mist' to conceptualise the future in the context of what we call stagnated crisis. Based on classic and experimental ethnographically inspired research with young Syrians in Jordan, we argue that the ways people pr…

  • Hyper-familiarity in profound uncertainty

    Open Access•B S Holst, Anders Hastrup•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 21

Through an ethnographic and interview-based account of the visions Syrian youth in Amman, Jordan, hold of and for the future, this article explores the coexistence of the perception that 'there is no future' and myriad ways through which young Syrians work towards better futures. We argue that such work is undertaken in the indicative mood, marking out a place for Syrians in Jordan in the present rather than a way forward. We further show that in…

  • Family Matters in Conflict

    Open Access•B S Holst•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2023

Through an ethnographic account of quotidian family activities like cooking or watching the news, this article investigates how authoritarian history and ongoing conflict in Syria play out in the everyday life of Syrians displaced to Lebanon and Turkey. It traces the day-to-day activities through which the value of the anti-authoritarian actions of some family members is recalibrated in friction with the social and material price the family has p…

What happens with data when the research process radically involves and engages those who are in the target group? How can we move towards collaborative insights by integrating our participants in the design of research, conduct of work, and, ultimately, its writing and dissemination? And how does this enable us to devise better futures when imagining such futures may be the very problem? Based on experimental research methods with Syrian refugee…

  • On the Inside

    Open Access•B S Holst•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 12

As thousands of Syrians have sought refuge in Lebanon since 2011, many have moved to Palestinian camps in search of affordable accommodation. While one of these camps, Shatila on the outskirts of Beirut, is highly studied as the site of fervent political engagement and destitution among Palestinians, the camp emerges as a different kind of proposition when investigated from the perspective of Syrian refugees. Based on 14 months of ethnographic fi…
