  • Kafka and Realism

    Open Access•Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2024

A curious scene takes place in the middle of Kafka's final novel-fragment, Das Schloß. Having just been upbraided by the headmistress of the school where he has been set up as caretaker, K., now alone with his fiancée Frieda, hears a knock at the door and rushes to open it, thinking it is Barnabas with a message from the Castle. Instead, it turns out to be the young schoolboy Hans Brunswick, the precocious son of the village shoemaker, who tells …

  • Dinge, Sachen, Gegenstände

Julia Maas, Lucas Marco Gisi et al.•BOOK•Dinge, Sachen, Gegenstände•2019

  • Human Fragments

    Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•Journal of Austrian Studies•2013

This article examines three of Joseph Roth’s feuilletons in the context of the intersecting discourses of anthropology, medicine, and ethics in post-World War I Europe. Specifically, the article connects Roth’s description of the reconstructive surgery ward at the Charité hospital in Berlin, founded by pioneering surgeon Jacques Joseph, to the political-philosophical notion of “bare life,” in order to show how Roth thereby points to a new concept…

  • Specters of Narrative

    Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•Journal of Narrative Theory•2011•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Specters of Narrative: Ismail Kadare’s The General of the Dead Army Erica Weitzman (bio) The Penates are inner gods, gods of the underworld; the spirit of a people (Athena) is the divinity that knows and wills itself. —G. W. F. Hegel, The Philosophy of Right The long grey line has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and grey, would rise from their white crosses, thundering those magic words:…

  • Almost Necessary

    Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2011

Almost Necessary:Kafka's Kantian Situation Comedy Erica Weitzman (bio) In a letter of December 28, 1908 to Elsa Taussig (later to become the wife of Max Brod), Kafka writes the following: Gnädiges Fräulein, erschrecken Sie nicht, ich will Sie nur, wie ich es übernommen habe, rechtzeitig daran erinnern (und möglichst spät, damit Sie nicht mehr daran vergessen), daß Sie heute abend mit Ihrer Schwester ins "Orient" gehen wollten. Schreibe ich mehr, …

  • No Fun

    Open Access•Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2008

“Fun” functions as at once cipher and overdetermined signifier in Adorno's writings. Clearly of the enemy camp, the term variously encompasses kitsch and “culinary” art, commodity fetishism, fascist ideologies, historical amnesia, and the general tawdriness and tackiness of Southern California in the 1950s. But “fun” is also closely allied with the play (and perhaps also the pleasure) “without which there is no more possibility of art than of the…

  • The World in Pieces

    Erica Weitzman•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2007

This paper draws parallels between Kierkegaard's themes of anxiety, and despair, and irony as they are laid out in The Concept of Anxiety, The Sickness Unto Death, and The Concept of Irony, respectively, and similar motifs in his compatriot Hans Christian Andersen's long moralizing fairy-tale, "The Snow Queen." Bringing a psychoanalytical framework to bear on all these works, the paper argues that "The Snow Queen" is in many ways a dramatization …
