Prevalence of Hearing, Vision and Cognitive Impairment and Impact in Older Adults in Home Care
BACKGROUND: Hearing, vision and cognitive impairments are common yet frequently underrecognized among older adults. Although these impairments affect quality of life, functional independence and psychological well-being, there are no published data on the prevalence and consequences of these impairments in relation to Australian home care populations. This protocol outlines a cross-sectional investigation into the prevalence of hearing, vision an…
Protocol for the Process Evaluation of the Sense‐Cog Sensory Support Intervention Field Trial to Improve Quality of Life for Older People Receiving Home Care in Australia
BACKGROUND: A field trial of a home-delivered hearing and vision support intervention will assess its impact on the quality of life and well-being of home care recipients with hearing and/or vision impairment and their care partners. AIMS: This paper outlines the protocol for a process evaluation of the field trial. The process evaluation aims to identify discrepancies between expected and actual outcomes, understand contextual influences, assess…
Understanding food choices and promoting healthier food options among online food delivery service users in Australia
Individual and social circumstances, together with online marketing techniques, drive consumers' food purchasing decisions on OFDS. Actions are needed to enhance the accessibility, availability and desirability (through increased visibility and price promotions) of healthy food options on OFDS to promote healthy food choices
Disobeying the Leader
Many innovative products are attributable to employees disobeying the mandate of their supervisors to stop working on a creative idea, that is, creative deviance. Surprisingly, there has been a dearth of empirical research on this important construct, and the possible negative social outcomes of creative deviance remain unexplored. This research integrates psychological ownership theory and motivated information processing theory to theoretically…
Norm-Violating Behavior in Organizations
Norm violations can not only cause harm but also contribute to the well-being of organizations. During the last several decades, two different foci of research on workplace norm violations have generated a host of empirical studies on both constructive and destructive norm-violating behavior (NVB). However, the two closely related bodies of literature have remained in almost complete isolation from each other. Our conceptual review seeks to kindl…
The impact of anonymous, two-way, computer-mediated communication on perceived whistleblower credibility
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of two-way, computer-mediated communication on investigator perceptions of whistleblower credibility. Design/methodology/approach Investigators were recruited to participate in an online experiment that tasked subjects with evaluating simulated two-way, computer-mediated communication between an investigator and whistleblower. Several rival explanations were also examined to account …
Creativity in reactivity
University Indigenous Education Units (IEU) support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ success, via providing academic, social, and cultural support and a sense of community on campus. As a result of the social distancing guidelines imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, Australian universities have transitioned to online learning and campuses have closed. These rapid changes pose challenges for IEUs who have had to quickly i…
Exploring touch as a positive workplace behavior
Whereas most research has focused on the negative aspects of touch in the workplace (i.e. sexual harassment), this study focuses upon the positive use of touch. In an effort to explain individual differences in the use of workplace touch, three sequential studies are used to introduce the concepts of workplace touch self-efficacy and workplace touch initiation anxiety. In Study 1 we develop scales to assess the constructs. Study 2 provides an ini…
How management style moderates the relationship between abusive supervision and workplace deviance
Workplace offense and victims' reactions
This study examined the effects of workplace offenders' characteristics and offense‐type on victims' reactions. Responses from 352 employed graduate students in the U.S. and South Korea to a hypothetical offense incident revealed that employees from the U.S. and Korea differ in their expressed desirability of avoiding, seeking revenge against, and reconciling with an offending coworker depending on the offenders' similarity/dissimilarity to the v…
Development of a global measure of job embeddedness and integration into a traditional model of voluntary turnover.
Recent research on job embeddedness has found that both on- and off-the-job forces can act to bind people to their jobs. The present study extended this line of research by examining how job embeddedness may be integrated into a traditional model of voluntary turnover. This study also developed and tested a global, reflective measure of job embeddedness that overcomes important limitations and serves as a companion to the original composite measu…
The relationship between trust, attachment, and antisocial work behaviors
Three studies tested hypotheses derived from an integrative social exchange — attachment model suggesting that employees' trust in an organization or its authorities predicts antisocial work behaviors, which should be mediated by the extent to which employees feel attached to the organization and/or its members. Study 1 showed that perceptions of workgroup cohesion mediate the relationship between trust in senior management and antisocial work be…
Why should I be generous when I have valued and accessible alternatives? Alternative exchange partners and OCB
An Erratum has been published for this article in Journal of Organizational Behavior 26(7) 2005, 873. Previous research on the relationship between alternative employment opportunities and cooperation has neglected the distinction between evaluations and restrictions. Thus, one cannot analyze the relationship between attractiveness of alternative employment opportunities and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) under different levels of per…
Development of a measure of workplace deviance.
The purpose of this research was to develop broad, theoretically derived measure(s) of deviant behavior in the workplace. Two scales were developed: a 12-item scale of organizational deviance (deviant behaviors directly harmful to the organization) and a 7-item scale of interpersonal deviance (deviant behaviors directly harmful to other individuals within the organization). These scales were found to have internal reliabilities of .81 and .78, re…
