  • Global, regional, and national levels of neonatal, infant, and under-5 mortality during 1990–2013

    Open Access•Haidong Wang, Chelsea A Liddell et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2014

BACKGROUND: Remarkable financial and political efforts have been focused on the reduction of child mortality during the past few decades. Timely measurements of levels and trends in under-5 mortality are important to assess progress towards the Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) target of reduction of child mortality by two thirds from 1990 to 2015, and to identify models of success. METHODS: We generated updated estimates of child mortality i…

  • The Effects of Polygyny and Domicility on Offspring Sex Ratio in Ghana

Adansi A Amankwaa, Adansi Amankwaa•ARTICLE•African and Asian Studies•2007

This article explores how family structure and domicility influences offspring sex ratio bias, specifically living arrangements of husband in polygynous unions. Data from three Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys were used to examine the relationship between family structure and offspring sex ratio at birth, something that previous studies have not been able to do. This study estimate models of sex ratio offspring if the wives live together with…

  • Three strikes and you're out

    Open Access•Carl P Schmertmann, Adansi A Amankwaa et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1998•Citada por: 4•Referências: 13

Much of the debate about the costs and benefits of “three-strikes” laws for repeat felony offenders is implicitly demographic, relying on unexamined assumptions about prison population dynamics. However, even state-of-the-art analysis has omitted important demographic details. We construct a multistate life-table model of population flows to and from prisons, incorporating age-specific transition rates estimated from administrative data from Flor…

  • The Florida Motor Vehicle Inspection Program

    Open Access•Aloysius Bavon, Adansi A Amankwaa•ARTICLE•Public Works Management & Policy•1997•Referências: 12

In 1991, Florida implemented the Motor Vehicle Inspection Program (MVIP) mandated by the Florida Clean Outdoor Air Law, which was passed in response to federal requirements for meeting ambient air quality standards. Has the implementation of this law resulted in decreased pollution levels as predicted by proponents of this program? The authors present a quasi-experimental evaluation of this question. Using an autoregressive integrated moving aver…

  • Prior and proximate causes of infant survival in Ghana, with special attention to polygyny

    Open Access•Adansi A Amankwaa•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1996

This study examines the role of marriage form in infant mortality and tests the relative effects and mechanisms through which polygyny affects infant survival. A sample of infants born in the 5 years preceding the 1988 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey was used. A causal model was constructed and polygyny was found to be an important mediating factor in understanding infant survival. The findings highlight the relevance of family structure (pol…

This paper analysed net migration within the context of [the] world economic system and urban ecological framework using the structural equation model." The author "employs linear structural equation modelling to examine determinants of international migration, using data from the World Bank World Tables, World Development Reports and the World Bank."
