  • Lessons from the Biggest Business Tax Cut in US History

Open Access•Gabriel Chodorow-Reich, Owen Zidar et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2024

We assess the business provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the biggest corporate tax cut in US history. We draw five lessons. First, corporate tax revenue fell by 40 percent due to the lower rate and more generous expensing. Second, firms with larger declines in their effective tax wedge increased investment relatively more. In aggregate, we suggest a loose consensus from the literature that total tangible corporate investment increased…

  • Secular Labor Reallocation and Business Cycles

    Gabriel Chodorow-Reich, Johannes Wieland•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

We revisit an old question: does industry labor reallocation affect the business cycle? Our empirical methodology exploits variation in a local labor market's exposure to industry reallocation on the basis of the area's initial industry composition and national industry employment trends for identification. Applied to confidential employment data over 1980–2014, we find sharp evidence of reallocation contributing to higher local area unemployment…

  • The Cyclicality of the Opportunity Cost of Employment

    Gabriel Chodorow-Reich, Loukas Karabarbounis•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2016•Citada por: 8•Referências: 1

The flow opportunity cost of moving from unemployment to employment consists of forgone public benefits and the forgone consumption value of nonworking time. We construct a time series of the opportunity cost of employment using detailed microdata and administrative or national accounts data to estimate benefits levels, eligibility, take-up, consumption by labor force status, hours, taxes, and preference parameters. The opportunity cost is procyc…

  • The Employment Effects of Credit Market Disruptions

Gabriel Chodorow-Reich•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2014

This article investigates the effect of bank lending frictions on employment outcomes. I construct a new data set that combines information on banking relationships and employment at 2,000 nonfinancial firms during the 2008–9 crisis. The article first verifies empirically the importance of banking relationships, which imply a cost to borrowers who switch lenders. I then use the dispersion in lender health following the Lehman crisis as a source o…
