Implementer learning in developmental evaluation
Cultural historical activity and expansive learning theories were employed in a retrospective case study to investigate implementer learning and how knowledge is co-created in the early stage of an inter-agency partnership supported with developmental evaluation. Data collection methods were semi-structured qualitative interviews, evaluator field notes of implementer discursive interactions, evaluator log, and ethnographic program observations. A…
Developmental Evaluator Functional Role Activities and Programmatic Developments
This case study examined the functional role activities of developmental evaluators in a school and community partnership employing a collaborative program model to improve an urban underperforming public school. Program implementers’ assessments of program developments and their experience with developmental evaluators were also examined. Data sources included program documents, evaluator field notes, and two rounds of interviews with program im…
Adolescent Coping
Adolescents often perceive aspects of their lives to be stressful, and their ability to manage stress has important health and risk behavior consequences. This study integrated recent developments in coping theory and adolescent leisure research to examine the relationship between adolescents' coping goals (active/accommodation vs. avoidance) and the types of leisure activities (structured vs. unstructured) adolescents engage in when they are str…
Preliminary Effects of a Leisure Education Program to Promote Healthy Use of Free Time among Middle School Adolescents
This paper documents the development and first year evaluation of the Time Wise: Learning Lifelong Leisure Skills curriculum, which aims to increase positive free time use, and mitigate or prevent the initiation of substance use and abuse. The sample was comprised of 634 school youth attending nine middle schools in a rural area in eastern United States. Results from self-report data indicate that students who received the Time Wise curriculum re…
Enhancing the Physical Activity Levels of Youth
Given the international focus on the physical activity levels of youth and the growing concern for more health-based leisure programs, it is an opportune time to review the determinants of the physical activity levels of youth. Additionally, the need for more prevention oriented programming has been made (Caldwell, 2000; Payne, 2002) and understanding the influences on type, frequency, duration, and intensity of children and adolescents' physical…
Differentiating Parent Practices Related to Adolescent Behavior in the Free Time Context
The purpose of this study was to examine parenting practices associated with adolescent free time use. Interviews (n = 17) were conducted with parents of adolescents (12–14 years) in two communities. Eight were from a university-based community in the northern U.S., and nine were recruited from rural communities outside a large metropolitan center in Eastern Canada. The parents in this study used a number of practices to structure, regulate and s…
Development of the Free Time Motivation Scale for Adolescents
A new self-report measure of adolescent free time motivation (FTMS-A) based in self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) has been developed. The scale measures five forms of motivation (amotivation, external, introjected, identified, and intrinsic motivation) and is appropriate for use with young adolescents (ages 12–15). Using confirmatory factor analysis, examination of each of the motivation subscales indicated minimally acceptable levels …
Exploring the Dimensions of Serious Leisure
This study examines the meaning of the serious leisure experience for American Kennel Club (AKC) activity participants. Particular attention is given to issues of the centrality of leisure participation as it relates to personal identification with the leisure pursuit and adopting a “dog person” lifestyle. This serious leisure pursuit differs from others previously examined because amateurs and professionals compete together. Hobbyists and amateu…
