Uurimuses vaadeldakse eesti keele vÃμÃμrsÃμnu, mille järgsilbis on iii välde ja/vÃμi pikk vokaal. Sellistes vÃμÃμrsÃμnades vÃμib pearÃμhk olla iii väldet ja/ vÃμi pikka vokaali sisaldaval järgsilbil vÃμi esisilbil. Prosodic phrasing of the parenthetical palun ‘please’ in Estonian requests
This study investigates the prosody of the Estonian parenthetical palun ‘please’ in imperative requests. The occurrence of prosodic phrase boundary cues such as pauses, pre-boundary lengthening, and creaky voice as well as pitch characteristics and accentuation are analysed. Estonian is a verb-second (V2) language: in certain types of sentences, the finite verb tends to be the second constituent. The V2 feature of Estonian is most likely to have developed under Germanic influence. However, there are differences between Germanic and Estonian V2 order. This paper examines the role of prosody in a little-studied type of non-canonical questions: syntactically and lexically canonical interrogative sentences that have been uttered by the speaker in order to express surprise. The paper contributes to the understanding of the variation in finite verb placement in Estonian, a verb-second language, by establishing two descriptive facts. First, it identifies a previously undescribed finite verb position in Estonian declarative main clauses, which will be referred to as ‘clause-medial’. Implications of a Construction for the Theory of Grammaticalization
The paper proceeds from a comparison of a grammaticalization and a constructional account of a class of formulaic adverbial expressions from Estonian. The comparison is argued to reveal that the grammaticalization analysis is informed by a particular synchronic model of grammar, and thus that the study of grammaticalization more generally is dependent on the assumed conception of grammar.
