Open Access•Richard A Crosby, Cesar B Mamaril et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2021

PURPOSE: Given the innovation of fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) to detect polyps in the rectum and colon for removal by colonoscopy, it is important to determine the cost per Life-Year Gained (LYG) when using FIT as a population-level screening model. This is particularly true for medically underserved rural populations. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to make this determination among rural Appalachians experiencing isolation and e…

Cynthia A Graham, Richard A Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2020

Objectives: Despite evidence that menstrual bleeding is a risk factor for sexually transmissible infections, few studies have assessed the prevalence of, and reasons for, condom use during menses. The objectives of the present study were to examine (1) the prevalence of condom use during menses; (2) if condom use during menses varies depending on age and gender inequality of country of residence; and (3) whether age and gender inequality of count…

Tourism destinations are contexts which are often characterised by unique norms for social and sexual behaviours which have implications for health and wellbeing. The purpose of this qualitative study was twofold: (1) to describe the sexual risk behaviours of young tourism workers (TWs), and (2) to explore socio-contextual factors pertaining to safer sex among TWs. Banff, Canada was the study site. Twenty-nine TWs were recruited and interviewed i…

  • Correlates Associated With Willingness to Start Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) in Jackson, Mississippi

    Lori M Ward, M A Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2019

Black men who have sex with men have the greatest risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method. However, uptake in this group is extremely low. Data from a sample of 225 human immunodeficiency virus-negative young black men who have sex with men residing in Jackson, Mississippi, were analyzed to examine correlates associated with willingness to start PrEP. Consistent cond…

It reports on the proportion of returned Fecal Immunochemical Test kits, on the characteristics of study participants, and on their primary reasons for returning the kit. By conducting home visits and follow-up calls, our colorectal cancer-screening outreach resulted in a higher Fecal I…

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the association of psychosocial factors relevant to cervical cancer and the outcome of ever having a Pap test i…

  • Antecedents of Condom-Protected Oral Sex Among Young Black MSM

Richard A Crosby, Robin R Milhausen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2017

Oral sex among men who have sex with men (MSM) is a common mode of STI transmission. This study identified the prevalence and antecedents of condom-protected oral sex among a sample of 526 young Black MSM having oral sex in the past 90 days. Men engaging in condomless anal receptive sex were less likely to report always using condoms for oral sex (p = .007). Men agreeing that “condoms help me have better sex” (p = .004) and those indicating alway…

The distribution was tested for associations with possible antecedents of sexual risk. YBMSM (N = 600), aged 16-29 years, were recruited from a sexually transmitted infection clinic, located in the southern US. Men completed an extensive audio computer-assisted self-interview. Thirteen p…

  • Correlates of Community‐Based Colorectal Cancer Screening in a Rural Population

Open Access•Richard A Crosby, Tom Collins•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2017

OBJECTIVE: One largely unexplored barrier to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is fatalistic beliefs about cancer. The purpose of this study was to identify correlates of ever having endoscopy screenings for CRC and to determine whether fatalism plays a unique role. Because evidence suggests that cancer-associated fatalistic beliefs may be particularly common among rural Americans, the study was conducted in a medically underserved area of rural …

METHODS: Residents were recruited in 8 rural Kentucky counties to enroll in the study and receive an FIT kit. Of 345 recruited, 82.0% returned an FIT kit from the point of distribution. These participants were compared to the remainder relative to age, sex, marital status…

Open Access•Robin C Vanderpool, Emily V Dressler et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2015

PURPOSE: Uptake and completion of the 3-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is important for the primary prevention of cervical cancer. However, HPV vaccination rates among adolescent females and young women remain low in certain geographic areas of the United States, including Appalachia. Although greater fatalistic beliefs have been previously associated with lower rates of preventive cancer behaviors among adults, little research exists on…
