  • Learning Accurate Onset Clusters

    Open Access•Claire Moore-Cantwell, Anne‐michelle Tessier et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2025•Referências: 57

This study investigates young school-aged children’s knowledge (at 4–7 years) of accurate English word-initial onset clusters. By this age, we expect children to be mostly accurate in producing #CC clusters (rather than repairing them with deletion or epenthesis). We ask how well can they recognize and reject cluster repair errors, in both real and nonce word tasks. The results suggest that these learners’ cluster judgment skills lag behind their…

  • Violations of Lab-Learned Phonological Patterns Elicit a Late Positive Component

    Open Access•Claire Moore-Cantwell, Joe Pater et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2024•Referências: 62

The experimental study of artificial language learning has become a widely used means of investigating the predictions of theories of language learning and representation. Although much is now known about the generalizations that learners make from various kinds of data, relatively little is known about how those representations affect speech processing. This paper presents an event-related potential (ERP) study of brain responses to violations o…

  • Weight and final vowels in the English stress system

    Open Access•Claire Moore-Cantwell•ARTICLE•Phonology•2020

This paper presents both dictionary evidence and experimental evidence that the quality of a word's final vowel plays a role in assigning main stress in English. Specifically, a final [i] pushes main stress leftwards – three-syllable words ending with [i] have a strong tendency to take antepenultimate stress. This pattern is compared with the Latin Stress Rule for English, according to which words with heavy penultimate syllables should have penu…

  • Modeling Morphological Subgeneralizations

    Open Access•Claire Moore-Cantwell, Robert Staubs•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2014

Exceptions to morphological regularities often pattern together phonologically. In the English past tense, exceptions to the regular ‘Add /-d/’ rule frequently inhabit ‘Islands of Reliability’ (Albright & Hayes, 2003), in which a group of words take the same irregular past and also pattern together on a set of phonological characteristics. Adults seem to have implicit knowledge of both the overall pattern (the regular past) and the ‘subgeneraliza…

  • Gerard Manley Hopkins' sprung rhythm

    Open Access•Bruce Hayes, Claire Moore-Cantwell•ARTICLE•Phonology•2011

Sprung rhythm is a complex poetic metre invented and used by Gerard Manley Hopkins. We re-examine and amplify a seminal analysis of this metre by Kiparsky (1989). We coded the sprung rhythm corpus for stress, weight and phrasing, then used a computer program to locate every scansion compatible with Kiparsky's analysis. The analysis appears to be nearly exceptionless. However, it is incomplete in that it permits dozens or even hundreds of scansion…
