  • The Emphatic and Pharyngeal Sounds in Hebrew and in Arabic

    Open Access•Asher Laufer, Thomas Baer•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1988•Citada por: 15•Referências: 8

This study addresses physiological, acoustic, and linguistic issues in the production of the emphatic sounds // and the pharyngeal sounds //. Approximately 300 minutes of video recordings were obtained from nine Hebrew and Arabic speakers; using a fiberscope positioned in the upper pharynx and simultaneous audio recording through an external microphone. We also studied a cineradiographic film of three Arabic speakers. Results clearly show that al…

  • Laryngeal Management At Utterance-Internal Word Boundary in American English

    Open Access•Leigh Lisker, Thomas Baer•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1984•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Much attention has been given to the acoustic and physiological means by which the /bdg/-/ptk/ distinction in English is signaled. The most important articulatory difference has been found to involve the nature and timing of laryngeal action associated with the stop articulation. For the labial stops /b/ and /p/ at least three, and possibly four, phonetic classes must be recognized, but we cannot assume that these make up the complete inventory o…

  • Dynamics of Vowel Articulation

    Open Access•Peter J Alfonso, Thomas Baer•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1982•Citada por: 23•Referências: 10

The dynamics of vowel articulation was studied by simultaneously monitoring articulator muscle activity, movement, and acoustic output while a single speaker produced multiple repetitions of 10 different vowels in a / pVp/ environment. Analysis of the data from the three measurement levels provided a complete physiological description of the subject's vowel space and showed good agreement among the different levels of description. Intra-articulat…

  • Tongue Position in Rounded and Unrounded Front Vowel Pairs

    Open Access•Lawrence J Raphael, Fredericka Bell-Berti et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1979•Citada por: 7•Referências: 6

Traditional articulatory descriptions of front rounded and unrounded vowel pairs have assumed that tongue height is the same for the members of the pairs /i-y/, /e-ø/, and /ε-œ/. The electromyographic, articulatory synthetic, and acoustic investigations carried out in this study indicate that, in Dutch, the rounded member of the pairs /i-y/ and /e-ø/ was centralized. In the /ε-œ/ pair, however, the rounded vowel bears a different relationship to …
