  • Onset-tone interaction in Mundabli

Open Access•Tianle Yang, Matthew Faytak•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2025

This paper presents an acoustic study of Mundabli tones from original fieldwork data, specifically focusing on interactions of onset consonant type (voiceless obstruents, voiced obstruents, and sonorants) and f0 level and trajectory of tones. Our results reveal that voiceless obstruents condition an abrupt rise in f0 at vowel onset, while voiced obstruents and sonorants maintain similar, relatively steady f0 levels, providing evidence for an acco…

  • Voiced aspirates with mixed voicing in Yemba, a Grassfields Bantu language of Cameroon

    Open Access•Matthew Faytak, Jeremy Steffman•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2023•Referências: 3

Using electroglottography and acoustic measures, we characterize the strength and quality of voicing in voiced aspirated and unaspirated consonants (stops, fricatives, and approximants) in Yemba (Grassfields Bantu, Cameroon). We show that the Yemba voiced aspirates exhibit mixed voicing : modal voicing during the consonant constriction, but voiceless aspiration after release. Breathy or whispery phonation extends slightly into consonant constrict…

  • Place uniformity and drift in the Suzhounese fricative and apical vowels

    Matthew Faytak•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2022

Suzhounese exhibits an unusual place anteriority contrast between rounded and unrounded dorso-palatal high front vowels, postalveolar fricative vowels, and apico-alveolar apical vowels. This arrangement is vulnerable to loss under intensifying contact with Standard Mandarin. Using acoustic and tongue ultrasound data, we investigated the phonetic implementation of place in the Suzhounese fricative and apical vowels and the similarity of place targ…

  • Areal patterns in the vowel systems of the Macro-Sudan Belt

Open Access•Nicholas Rolle, Françoise Lionnet et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2020

This paper investigates the areal distribution of vowel systems in the Macro-Sudan Belt, an area encompassing most of the western and central parts of northern Sub-Saharan Africa. We report on a survey of 681 language varieties with entries coded for two phonological features: advanced tongue root (ATR) harmony and the presence of interior vowels (i.e. non-peripheral vowels [ɨ ɯ ɜ ə ʌ ... ]). Our results show that the presence of ATR harmony in t…

  • Kejom (Babanki)

    Open Access•Matthew Faytak, Pius W Akumbu•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2020

Kejom [k̀ɘd͡ʒɔ́m], the preferred autonym for the language more commonly known as Babanki, is a Central Ring Grassfields Bantu language (ISO 693-3: [bbk]) spoken in the Northwest Region of Cameroon (Hyman 1980, Hammarström et al. 2017, Simons & Fennig 2017). The language is spoken mainly in two settlements shown in Figure 1, Kejom Ketinguh [k̀ɘd͡ʒɔ́m ↓kɘ́tÍnɡ̀uʔ] and Kejom Keku [k̀ɘd͡ʒɔ́m ↓kɘ́k̀u], also known as Babanki Tungoh and Big Babanki, res…

  • Dissimilation by surface correspondence in Aghem velarized diphthongs

    Open Access•Matthew Faytak•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2014

Aghem exhibits a static co-occurrence restriction involving an intrusive velar segment present in two of the language's falling diphthongs. I provide a brief descriptive overview of these unusual phonetic structures and an Agreement by Correspondence (ABC) analysis of the phenomenon as dissimilation with the intent of avoiding suboptimal correspondence

  • Compiling sonority scales with obstruent vowels

    Open Access•Matthew Faytak•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2012

It has been argued that languages systematically license syllabicity to all segment classes more sonorous than the least sonorous syllabic segment in that language (Blevins 1995).1 The syllabic segments found in American English exemplify this arrangement, which results in a contiguous zone of segment classes that can be licensed syllabicity (the permitted nuclei). Since sonority scales have been argued to be ranked with input from acoustic param…
