  • Glacier fluctuation chronology since the latest Pleistocene at Mount Rainier, Washington, USA

    Open Access•Mary Samolczyk, Mary A Samolczyk et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

Large stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range have high equilibrium-line altitudes that support glaciers whose Holocene and latest Pleistocene advances are amenable to dating. Glacier advances produced datable stratigraphic sequences in lateral moraines, which complement dating of end moraines. New mapping of glacial deposits on Mount Rainier using LIDAR and field observations supports a single latest Pleistocene or early Holocene advance. Rainier R…

  • Late Holocene fluctuations of Stoppani Glacier, southernmost Patagonia

Open Access•Brian Menounos, Lyssa Maurer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Some lateral moraines contain a rich record of Holocene glacial expansion. Previous workers have used such evidence to document glacial fluctuations in western Canada, Alaska, and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, but similar studies in Patagonia are uncommon. Here we report on the late Holocene behavior of Stoppani Glacier, a 75 km 2 glacier sourced in the Cordillera Darwin, southernmost Patagonia. Based on radiocarbon-dated wood and organic material …

  • Lichenometric Dating

Open Access•Gerald Osborn, Daniel Mccarthy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

The popular technique of estimating ages of deposits from sizes of lichens continues despite valid criticism, and without agreement on range of utility, treatment of error, and methods of measurement, sampling, and data handling. A major source of error is the assumption that the largest lichen(s) colonized soon after deposition and will survive indefinitely. Recent studies on lichen mortality suggest that this assumption is untenable. Meanwhile,…

  • Late Pleistocene and Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes in central Tierra del Fuego (~54°S) inferred from pollen analysis

  • Alpine glaciers and permanent ice and snow patches in western Canada approach their smallest sizes since the mid-Holocene, consistent with global trends

    Open Access•Johannes Koch, John J Clague et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Referências: 23

Most alpine glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere reached their maximum extents of the Holocene between ad 1600 and 1850. Since the late 1800s, however, glaciers have thinned and retreated, mainly because of atmospheric warming. Glacier retreat in western Canada and other regions is exposing subfossil tree stumps, soils and plant detritus that, until recently, were beneath tens to hundreds of metres of ice. In addition, human artefacts and caribou …

  • What Causes Regional Differences in Holocene and Latest Pleistocene Glacier Advances in North America

    Open Access•Gerald Osborn•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Late-Holocene fluctuations of the Bear River Glacier, northern Coast Ranges of British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•Gerald Osborn, Rebecca Haspel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Referências: 10

During Holocene advances of the Bear River Glacier, in northwestern British Columbia, ice pushed against a bedrock slope on the north side of Bear River Pass as it was being diverted eastward and westward along the pass. The result is a series of till sheets plastered against the rock slope and separated by wood mats. This sequence of tills provides an unusually detailed record of early-Neoglacial history and shows that Neoglacial expansion in th…

  • Pre-`Little Ice Age' glacier fluctuations in Garibaldi Provincial Park, Coast Mountains, British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•Johannes Koch, Gerald Osborn et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 5•Referências: 7

Holocene glacier fluctuations prior to the `Little Ice Age' in Garibaldi Provincial Park in the British Columbia Coast Mountains were reconstructed from geomorphic mapping and radiocarbon ages on 37 samples of growth-position and detrital wood from glacier forefields. Glaciers in Garibaldi Park were smaller than at present in the early Holocene, although some evidence exists for minor, short-lived advances at this time. The first well-documented …

  • Evaluation of proposed early-Holocene advances of alpine glaciers in the North Cascade Range, Washington State, USA

    Open Access•Mel A Reasoner, P Thompson Davis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2001•Referências: 4

Many palaeoenvironmental reconstructions from across western North America indicate that the early to mid-Holocene was warmer and drier than present. The wide distribution of these records suggests that relatively mild and arid conditions were regionally ubiquitous during the early Holocene. In contrast, two recently proposed advances of alpine glaciers in the Cascade Range of Washington State, corresponding to equilibrium-line altitude depressio…

  • Geologic constraints on archeological interpretations of a Late Wisconsinan site at Varsity Estates, Calgary, Alberta

Open Access•Gerald Osborn, Lionel Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2000

  • Latest pleistocene and early Holocene fluctuations of glaciers in the Canadian and northern American Rockies

    Open Access•Gerald Osborn, Lisa Gerloff•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1997

  • Neoglacial Glacier Fluctuations in the Canadian Rockies

    Open Access•Brian H Luckman, Gerald Holdsworth et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

The Little Ice Age was the most extensive Neoglacial glacier advance in the Canadian Rockies. Evidence of earlier, less-extensive Neoglacial glacier advances is based on wood recovered from several glacier forefields. Wood flushed out of Athabasca Glacier (7550-8230 yr B.P., three dates) and Dome Glacier (6120-6380 yr B.P., two dates) indicates that forests occurred upvalley of present glacier termini during the Hypsithermal. Detrital logs from P…

  • Lateral-Moraine Stratigraphy and Neoglacial History of Bugaboo Glacier, British Columbia

    Open Access•Gerald Osborn•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

Most studies of alpine glacial history have concentrated on terminal moraines, but such moraines provide dates only for maximum extents of glaciers. Some lateral moraines have the potential for providing more complete glacial histories, because deposition by distal-flank accretion may result in sequences of stacked tills. Interpretation is aided by (1) the approximation that any continuous surface within the moraine parallel to the moraine's dist…

  • Geomorphological Processes in the Inselberg Region of South-Western Jordan

    Gerald Osborn, J Matthew Duford•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•1981•Referências: 1

The spectacular relief of the sandstone inselbergs is maintained by an interplay of geological structure and weathering/erosion processes, in that vertical joints and faults provide the foci along which most weathering and erosion take place. There are three major varieties of sandstone breakdown; the first is failure of large rock masses along vertical joints, leading to rockfall. Associated with this process is the mechanical breaking of fallin…

  • Holocene Glacier Fluctuations in the Middle Canadian Rocky Mountains

    Open Access•Brian H Luckman, Gerald Osborn et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1979

Holocene glacial advances in the Banff–Jasper–Yoho area of the Canadian Rocky Mountains have been extremely limited in extent. Limiting 14 C dates from two sites within 1 km of contemporary glaciers of fresh terminal moraines indicate that the late Wisconsin Ice Sheet and valley glaciers disappeared prior to 9660 yr B.P. Two subsequent glacial advances are recognized. The earlier Crowfoot Advance is represented by moraines and rock-glacier deposi…

  • Lichenometry on Calcareous Substrates in the Canadian Rockies

Open Access•Gerald Osborn, John Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

Lichen distribution and growth were examined at several sites in the Canadian Rockies between Mt. Robson and Banff townsite to determine the feasibility of lichenometry on calcareous deposits. The only lichen common enough to be of use is Xanthoria elegans , a bright orange lichen with round or elliptical thalli. It is not an ideal species for lichenometry because (a) it grows fairly quickly and has a range of only a few centuries, (b) growth is …
