  • Spatial patterns of steam technology diffusion in nineteenth-century France

    Open Access•Charlotte Le Chapelain, Ralf A Wilke•ARTICLE•Cliometrica•2025

This paper introduces a unique regional panel data set reflecting steam power use in the French départements from 1841 to 1911 and investigates, on this basis, the time and spatial patterns of steam technology diffusion in nineteenth-century France. While in the existing literature most quantitative assessments of steam power use in French industries rely on statistical information coming from the industrial censuses conducted in 1839–1847, 1860–…

  • Quantile Regression Methods

Open Access•Bernd Fitzenberger, Ralf A Wilke•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2015

Quantile regression is emerging as a popular statistical approach, which complements the estimation of conditional mean models. While the latter only focuses on one aspect of the conditional distribution of the dependent variable, the mean, quantile regression provides more detailed insights by modeling conditional quantiles. Quantile regression can therefore detect whether the partial effect of a regressor on the conditional quantiles is the sam…

  • Unemployment Durations in West Germany Before and After the Reform of the Unemployment Compensation System during the 1980s

    Open Access•Bernd Fitzenberger, Ralf A Wilke•ARTICLE•German Economic Review•2010

This paper analyzes empirically the distribution of unemployment durations in West Germany during the 1980s and 1990s. It therefore covers periods before and after the changes during the mid-1980s in the maximum entitlement periods for unemployment benefits for older unemployed. The analysis is based on the IAB employment subsample containing administrative data for about 500,000 individuals. Since these data only partly reveal the unemployment d…

  • Reform of Unemployment Compensation in Germany

Sokbae Lee, Ralf A Wilke•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2009

Economic theory suggests that an extension of the maximum length of entitlement for unemployment benefits increases the duration of unemployment. Empirical results for the reform of the unemployment compensation system in Germany during the 1980s are less clear. The analysis in this article is motivated by recent developments in econometrics for partial identification. We use extensive administrative data with the drawback that we can only observ…

  • Unemployment Duration in Germany

Arntz M. and Wilke R. A. Unemployment duration in Germany: individual and regional determinants of local job finding, migration and subsidized employment, Regional Studies. Recent labour market reforms in Germany aim, among other things, at reducing unemployment by restricting passive unemployment measures, emphasizing local labour market policies and restructuring public employment services. This paper uses extensive individual administrative an…
