Nietzsche on the Rise of Strong Political States and Their Cultivation of Higher Individuals
I argue that Nietzsche offers an account of how strong political states develop and how the highest forms of individuality emerge when the political will of these strong states weakens. Communities develop strength in proportion to the hostility of their environment. I argue that the political significance of Georges Bataille's work has been underdeveloped and that his work provides significant resources for understanding and evaluating contemporary societies. We should interpret Bataille's historical analysis of political societies as an account of the management and exploitation of sacred desire by elites that recognize its power. This paper furthers the understanding of Nietzsche's project of increasing the prevalence of higher individuals. I do this by opposing the dominant tendency in Nietzschean scholarship of constructing a single ideal‐type.
