  • Don't shoot yourself in the foot! A (real-effort task) experiment on income redistribution and voting

Open Access•Natalia Jiménez, Natalia Jiménez-Jiménez et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2023

This paper reports results from a laboratory experiment that investigates the Meltzer–Richard model of equilibrium tax rates in which individuals are either low or high skilled workers and face a real-effort task that includes leisure at the work place. We find that a large proportion of low-skilled workers vote for the lowest tax rate (the one that gives them the lowest payoff), especially when the alternative tax rate is very high. However, thi…

  • Religious favoritism in Europe

    Open Access•Pablo Brañas-Garza, Pablo Brañas–garza et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2010•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

This paper explores a highly controversial issue: while most European countries are secular, the governments of these countries widely support religious institutions. The arguments put forward by the median voter seem insufficient to explain the data. We show that if political parties are allowed to take an ideological position with respect to religion, the observed deviations from the most preferred policy by the median voter could be explained

  • Legal or illegal? Preferences on immigration

Open Access•Ángel Solano García, Ángel Solano‐García•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2008•Referências: 4

The political debate about regularisation programmes for undocumented migrants is a very controversial issue. The main goal of this article is to explain why governments decide to grant amnesties to illegal immigrants as a part of their immigration policy. We propose a simple political competition model in which we first derive the voters' preferences over a menu of regularisation programmes. Labour market conditions make skilled workers more pro…
