  • Grief-time in Wave 1.12.22

    Open Access•M Tristano•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2026

This essay responds to Desirée Rowe’s Wave 1.12.22. I read Rowe’s performance as an experiment in grief-time. Through a Black and women of color feminist reading of Rowe’s performance, I demonstrate the utility of grief-time, what it makes visible of our social landscapes, and consider it an equipment for living for other worldings.

  • The Space of In-Betweenness

Dacheng Zhang, Lore/tta Lemaster et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2025

This essay engages the idea of “incommensurability” as a reflexive attunement to recognizing cultural differences as simultaneously non-equivalent and non-hierarchical. Specifically, we approach incommensurability as a response to commensurability, which we understand as a difference-as-problem assumption undergirding colonial modes of thinking within/beyond intercultural communication inquiry. By reviewing several frameworks that inform a politi…

  • Lingering longer

    Open Access•M Tristano•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025

This essay moves through the nuances and complications of queer of color joy’s potentiality. Mobilized through performance, queer of color joy is theorized as containing possibilities “to explore the limits of human curiosity; renegotiate what relationships can look, feel, sound, and smell like; and use desire to propel us through the social world where we refuse colonial futures and expand decolonial options” (Tristano, 2022: 279). Through a per…

  • Banal Precarity

    M Tristano•ARTICLE•Women s Studies in Communication•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 10

Queer of color lives are always lived in close proximity to violence and death. Said differently, minoritarian subjects are constantly navigating positions of precarity in order to continue living. Precarity, then, is banal. This essay examines the quotidian performances of minoritarian subjects who navigate precarity every day. Animating this analysis is the Pulse nightclub shooting—an event which highlights the close proximity of precarity, vio…

  • Dancing with Data

Open Access•M Tristano, Ana Isabel Terminel Iberri•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2023

This paper contributes to the literature on collaborative scholarship by bringing together data from two different critical qualitative dissertation projects in order to better understand the way power complexly flows through communities in both academic and non-academic contexts. The metaphor of dance is used throughout this piece in order to capture the embodied and messy process of being in collaboration with one another as researchers, as sch…

  • Shitsex

    M Tristano•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

This essay responds and extends the discourse found in Corey and Nakayama’s “Sextext” and Gunn’s “ShitText.” Examining the process of anal douching, which washes away fecal matter from the anus before penetration, commonly found in queer sex practices, I argue that queers do not want shit in their sex; douching serves to “clean up,” sterilize, and legitimate queer sex in cis-heteronormative culture. Through the method of critical erotic/a, I argu…

  • Brown Trans Figuration

    M Tristano•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2022

In 2019, the University of Texas Press announced the launch of a new book series: “Latinx: The Future is Now.” Edited by Nicole Guidotti-Hernandez and Lorigia Garcia-Peña, the series invited authors to submit works that consider the multiple overlapping dynamics of queer and gender fluid potentialities embodied in the “x.” As I read and reflect on this call, I cannot help but giggle to myself. The “x.” It's tiny. A miniature coda to a word. And y…

  • Performing Queer of Color Joy Through Collective Crisis

    Open Access•M Tristano•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2022•Citada por: 18•Referências: 7

Through the use performative writing and autoethnography, this piece reflects on the current state of collective crises and social science to reinvigorate our approaches to building more equitable futures. More specifically, I push back on the politics of violent visibility for marginalized subjects both inside and outside the academy. I argue that texts and images of minoritarian trauma and violence reify the structures of power that created tho…

  • Performing (Asian American trans) femme on RuPaul’s Drag Race

    Lore/tta Lemaster, M Tristano•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 20

This essay turns to reality television to perform trans of color criticism. Taking as its analytic focus the embodied performance – and concomitant mediated production – of whiteness by Asian American drag queen competitor Gia Gunn on the reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race [Bailey, F., Barbato, R., Campbell, T., RuPaul, Corfe, S., Post, P., & Salangsang, M. (Executive Producers). (2012). RuPaul's drag race all stars [TV series]. World …
