Value, Competition and Exploitation
This book provides a comprehensive and rigorous, yet accessible, analysis of classical and Marxian price and value theory using the tools of contemporary economic analysis. The broad conceptual framework and methodology of Marx and the classical authors offers interesting and relevant perspectives on the basic structure and evolution of modern capitalist economies. Arguably, the book provides a deeper and more nuanced understanding of today's eco…
Roads to Social Capitalism
The current crises in the financialization of capitalism, and their repercussions on the financial viability of entire countries, severely question the achievements of mainstream economics and its disregard of Keynes’s theory of effective demand and finance. In view of this, Peter Flaschel and Sigrid Luchtenberg consider roads to a type of capitalism that could eventually be considered as ‘social’ in nature. The authors underpin their study with …

Labor Market Institutions and the Role of Elites in Flexicurity Societies
The paper argues that a process of capital accumulation exhibiting recurrent mass unemployment—due to the conflict over income distribution—does not represent a process that is adequate for a democratic society in the long run. The paper develops a basic macrodynamic framework where this process of cyclical growth is overcome by an ‘employer of first resort’ (an entity that provides employment security but not job security), added to an economic …
The Measurement of Prices of Production
This paper analyzes the theoretical and methodological issues related to the empirical measurement of prices of production and wage-profit curves. A number of shortcomings of the standard approach are discussed, focusing in particular on the neglect of capital stock matrices and on the empirically objectionable assumption of uniform profit rates. An alternative approach for the empirical analysis of wage-profit curves and prices of production is …

Public Debt and Public Investment in an Endogenous Growth Model With Real Wage Rigidities
We present an endogenous growth model with public capital, public debt and real wage rigidities due to labor market imperfections. Assuming that the primary surplus relative to gross domestic produce (GDP) is a positive function of the debt to GDP ratio, we study growth and employment effects of deficit-financed public investment using simulations as well as how fiscal policy affects stability of the economy. Further, we contrast the growth rate …

Steindlian Models of Growth and Stagnation
Following an analysis of the relation between a standard Steindlian model of stagnation and Steindl’s own analysis, we modify the standard model by introducing endogenous changes in the mark‐up and a reformulation of the investment function. These extensions, which address significant weaknesses of the standard model, find support in Steindl’s writing and leave intact some of Steindl’s key results. In a further extension, we add a labour market a…
The Dynamics of Keynesian Monetary Growth
Originally published in 2000, this book is in the tradition of non-market-clearing approaches to macrodynamic approaches. It builds a series of integrated disequilibrium growth models of increasing complexity, which display the economic interaction between households, firms and government across labour, goods, money, bonds and equities markets. Chiarella and Flaschel demonstrate how macrodynamics can be developed in a hierarchical way from econom…
Keynes‐Marx and Keynes‐Wicksell Models of Monetary Growth
This paper reconsiders and generalizes a dichotomizing two-sector real growth model of Marglin which claims that the steady state of capitalist economies is plagued by secular inflation. We show that this implication need not be true from the perspective of a more general steady state analysis and that the Marglin model can be embedded into a general Keynes-Marx-Friedman or Keynes-Wicksell framework where money is superneutral, where therefore in…
An Old-Keynesian Note on Destabilizing Price Flexibility
Tobin's (1975) macrodynamic model on 'recession and depression' is extended by introducing two separate adjustment rules for money wages and the price level. It turns out that sluggish prices and, under an additional assumption, also sticky wages are favourable for local stability of the long-run equilibrium, while a high degree of flexibility tends to be destabilizing. In addition, a disposition to cyclical behaviour is indicated
