  • An isotopic overview of dietary habits and subsistence practices in the Aegean World

    Open Access•Benjamin Irvine•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2025

This study provides a broad overview of human dietary habits and subsistence practices across time in the Aegean World (defined in the East by the coastal littoral of western Anatolia, Crete to the South, and eastern mainland Greece in the West). This was done principally through the collation and examination of previously published stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N values) from human bulk bone collagen. The sites/popul…

  • A historical case of Eagle’s syndrome from the Constantine-Helena Church, Niğde, Türkiye

  • Stable isotope analysis of faunal remains from Bronze Age Kaymakçı, Western Anatolia

    Open Access•Benjamin Irvine, Carmen Luke et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 72

This paper presents the results of stable carbon ( δ 13 C) and nitrogen ( δ 15 N) isotopic analysis of bulk bone collagen from faunal remains from the Bronze Age site of Kaymakçı in western Anatolia. We use the isotopic values in conjunction with zooarchaeological data and contextual archaeological information to examine human-environment interactions; in particular, animal management and husbandry. Middle and Late Bronze Age agricultural systems…

  • Working the Waste Commodity Frontier

    Open Access•Benjamin Irvine•ARTICLE•Antipode•2023•Citada por: 4•Referências: 54

Ambitions for a European “circular economy” imply waste is becoming an important “commodity frontier”. Increased recycling in Europe has been accompanied by a proliferation of informal waste work. “Southern” geographies of informal recyclers provide resources for interpreting this phenomenon but studies of a commodity frontier in urban waste have tended to focus on moments when informal waste workers are displaced by capital intensive waste manag…

  • Düzeltme

    Open Access•Benjamin Irvine, K Özdemir•ARTICLE•Antropoloji•2022

  • A Precarious Future

Open Access•Maxime Brami, Stephanie Emra et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 9•Referências: 2

This article presents the results of a 2021 international online survey of 419 early career researchers in archaeology. Respondents were passionate about pursuing an academic career, but pessimistic about job and career prospects. Statistics highlight specific obstacles, especially for women, from unstable employment to inequitable practices, and a chronic lack of support. Over 180 open-ended comments reveal worrying levels of workplace bullying …

  • Biogeochemical Approaches to Bioarchaeological Research in Turkey

    Benjamin Irvine, K Özdemir•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2020

Bone chemical composition (particularly utilizing isotopes) analysis was a relatively late bloomer, beginning in the early 2000s and only gathering pace in the last five to ten years. Trace element analysis had actually commenced in the 1980s, however, with a hiatus until its resurgence in the last decade. Currently, research into dietary habits, subsistence practices, and mobility has focused on early proto-sedentary and sedentary agricultural p…

amlbel Tarlas (3590-3470 cal BC) is a small farming settlement with metallurgical activity in north central Anatolia. Studies have demonstrated a direct relationship between diet, subsistence patterns, occupational habits and macrowear patterns and dental pathologies. In total 282 teeth from 26 individuals were macroscopically examined. The results showed that in many ways the inhabitants were typical of a Late Chalcolithic population with a subs…
